Hello Everyone,
I'm on a mission to find a "wicker" Sword Basket. If anyone has one collecting dust I'd love to hear from you! Will pay for freight. Xavier. |

Abbott's had an Indian make them back in the 1960's until he passed on. The only other basket I have know about was Kovari had real baskets. Not on his current site.
I would think that unless someone took excellent care of the wicker none should have lasted. Most illusionist suggest lining the basket with automobile fiberglas material to strengthen it. |

Denny and Lee's in Las Vegas had one a couple weeks ago - an Owen. It is a nice basket - not cheap.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I feel my search has become a little tougher. Maybe, I could compromise? I'm after one that looks like it is woven cane or similar. It's just really important that it is brown in colour. A "Chu's" model would be perfect.

Xavier-
I got a great solution for you... Make it from thick, cheap "hemp" style rope. There is a book called "Stage Craft" here in the USA, which teaches general prop making methods. Someplace in it, I can't remember what page, they go over the rope weaving method. I've seen it done, and it looks great! I mean GREAT! Even close up! My guess is you would have to start by pushing some wire in the rope for the pieces going in the up and down direction. Then just weave the rope through all the up and down pieces until it's the height you want. The rope is cheap too! You could probably have one weaved by someone who does caning (i.e.: wicker furniture maker/repairer, mat maker, rug maker). Hope this helps... Sincerely, Matt
"If I've told you once, I've told you a million times... Don't exaggerate!" And as Bill Hallahan requested, I can't put a website address in ANY post, so I'll add it here:

I had mine made for $100. I found a lady at a flea market who was a basket weaver. I gave her a few photos and some dimensons, and she made a great basket for me.
Alas, I cannot pass it on to you as a sold it ... but that might just be a source for you in getting one. |

Alex,
Nice looking and very deceptive basket. In fact I liked the look of all of your illusions! Your upright blade box is especially appealing to me as I used the old fashioned horizontal version back in the late 60’s in a small carnival (poor man’s circus!). Looks like you have the makings of an excellent illusion show. I enjoyed your website and especially appreciated that you had English translations from the Russian since my Russian is limited to Hello, good-by, excuse me, thank you, may I have a beer, how much, too much, and I want a lawyer. I enjoyed seeing you with Igor Kio. Is he the son of Emil Kio?

Thanks for compliments! Igor KIO my friend on art of illusions. We sometimes communicate. I not his son. At Kio there is a daughter.

May I suggest you email Kovari to see if they can provide.
http://www.waterfallstudios.co.uk/kovarimagic/index.htm Also you may want to post this on the 'Let's Make a Deal' section of the Café. You never stated if Owen's was beyond your means. What are you looking for actually? Here is the Owen Page, you must email them for the current price. You will suffer from 'sticker shock'. http://www.owenmagic.com/Illusions/Illus......s_2.html |

An Owens style would be perfect but unfortunately it is a little expensive. I have also posted this in the Let's Make a Deal section, however, no one has responded to it yet.
A basket made by "chu's" would be perfect or even a Abbott's model which the tech guys could paint. As long as it "looks" like it is made of woven cane. If you know anyone who may have one I'd love to hear from you! Thank you for all your help so far! Xavier. |

Unfortunately, Abbott's current model is made out of Fiberglas. It looks like the back side of fiberglass, very rough surface. It is paintable, but to make it look like a woven basket would be a paint job of airbrush love.
I think if you take the diminations to a basket weaver you would have better luck. Grant diminsions are 22" X 18" for the opening, 24" high from bottom/floor to top of opening. 42" across at widest point on one side. The other side is 30" at widest point. That is all they say about the size of the basket. I found a weaved hindu basket on Douglas Tilford web site for $995. If this is still to much for you, then you are looking for a bargain, and you will have a long wait and a hard long search. http://www.tilfordillusions.com This is all I can come up with for you. Enter Hindu in the search window. |

Around a $1000 is ok but I don't think the tilford model is very deceptive.
Thanks for the dimensions! I really hope I find one before I have to get someone to make one! LOL! |

If this is for a movie/film then simply buy the cheapest most beat-up model you can find. A bit of pant, proper lighting, and control of the camera angles are what is going to make the prop look deceptive! In fact a good magic prop may actually appear flat and present poorly on film.
You don’t even need to buy a real magic prop or even one made of wicker. Go to Pier One and buy a basket that your actor will fit in and buy some cheap prop swords. And you have all you need to build a film prop. You should be able to put together a “prop” piece for a couple of hundred dollars. Ok roll film, actor goes into the prop clearly just barely fitting. Cut. Actor gets out. Roll film and Magician sticks swords through the basket in places and angles that “prove” the assistant/actor cannot possible survive the ordeal then pull the swords out. Cut. Actor gets back in with different costume. Roll film, actor pops up – Ta! Da! Magic!!! Edit film to make smooth transitions. Show film and win the Sundance Film Festival award! Remember that film does not see what the human eye sees! It is clear to me that you are thinking like a magician and not at all about film/movie making. I have seen props that look like brick, stone, or metal that is nothing but paint on cardboard but on film looks like the real thing. I have visited movie sets that looked hokey and unreal but on film showed as a ballroom made of marble and rare woods. The futuristic fire truck in the old 70’s movie “Fahrenheit 451” was made of plywood and cardboard on an old truck frame! It barely lasted the duration of the shoot (I was there). Think filmmaking not magic show.

Thanks for all your help. I understand your point of view Harry but I really would like a proper basket. If worse comes to worse we wll make one. I just thought they might be a good chance there were a couple of second-hand units floating around.
Thanks again, Xavier. |

Xaiver, even if you want a “real” magic prop basket, I would not worry too much about the appearance details and simply get the cheapest one that even came close to fitting my mental image of what I wanted.
Alex, I was wondering if the magician Igor Kio is a son of the Russian magician Emil Kio? I saw Emil Kio perform in London in the early or mid 60’s. I was just wondering if they were related. Perhaps Kio is a common Russian name? Dia, My claim to fame in the film was that I was an “extra”! I played a fireman riding on the truck (two different shots actually made it to the screen) as the fire engine raced down a road going somewhere. I was also one of the firemen in an asbestos suit burning books (my big close-up). I only saw François Truffaut two or three times. He never really directed us. I was in the second unit under the directions of a fellow named Bryan Coates (second unit director). I did see Mr. Truffaut and Mr. Coates talking about how they wanted the scene framed. The only actor from the staring cast I got talk to was Cyril Cusack (the Captain). Oskar Werner was there too but I never had a chance to talk to him. Julie Christie was nowhere to be seen for the bits I was involved in. She was the only reason I even tried to get the job! I was hoping to see and maybe talk to her! Dang, double dang! Oh well, her loss!!! (Yeah sure! LOL_ I was simply an extra that wasn’t afraid of fire or hanging on the side of a rickety plywood and cardboard truck! Interestingly, most of the scenes I remember being filmed in didn’t seem to make it to the film so must have ended on the cutting room floor! Oh well such is life in the films, some of the best bits get left on the editing room floor!

I can't agree with you more Harry. I just wish that somebody had a sword basket they would like to sell!
