Caress of Telepathy

From another thread, a demonstration of telepathy between two persons is based on one being an “Agent” and the other a “Percipient.” A performer can choose which role to play and frame the paranormal event as to which role has the greater power or influence. This prompted me to reflect of the various combinations of framing and role that I have performed, observed or heard about. I will add some notes as to my impressions of each in order to prompt thinking, not to pass judgment on what anyone else should do.

ROLE

1) – performer as Agent
a) Percipient is passive and a thought is plunked into their mind.
b) Percipient is active and makes apparent free choices.
c) Percipient may switch roles and be Agent some of the time.

2) – performer as Percipient
a) Agent is passive. The Percipient plucks out random thoughts.
b) Agent is neutral. The Percipient extract a specific piece of information.
c) Agent is active and shares the exchange of information or influence.

3) – Performer as Conductor (neither Agent nor Percipient)
a) one “other” is Agent and another is Percipient.
b) both Others are Agent and Percipient.

FRAMING

A) the performer has a special power that controls the events, able to override personal shields and instantly sort though random thoughts to extract key information.

B) the performer can orchestrate conditions under which enhanced telecommunications is possible without willing participation of others.

C) same as (B) except that others must agree to participate, e.g. drop their shielding or focus on limited options.

D) the performer establishes a level of trust in everyone drops their shielding so as to allow for enhanced telecommunication.

E) everyone has innate telepathic abilities. The performer has more practiced and refined abilities under some conditions.

F) same as (E) except that the objective is to encourage another to demonstrate their enhanced ability under controlled conditions.

G) same as (F) except that several Others demonstrate this enhancement under controlled conditions.

OBSERVATIONS/Opinions

Every person in an audience has some experience with telepathy, believing that they have received a thought from another or that another has read their mind. These notions may be labeled as premonition, déjà vu, empathic bond, heightened intuition, etc. Each expects for the Performer some validation or possible explanation of this belief.

Each audience member has the desire to have enhanced abilities of a telepathic nature, while fearing the consequences of another reading their “inner thoughts.” Most are willing to participate in demonstrations/experiments except in A and 1a. About 1/3 will wish to be spectators only with no desire to be personally involved.

Most of the audience members have some sense of being able to shield their thoughts (or hope they do). Non-participation is one method of shielding. Of the 2/3 willing members, more will be open to “lowering shield” under tightly controlled conditions (little risk), than to allow for unspecified results. Trust is not based on surprise.

Many Performers seem to prefer C,1b or 2b. D and 2c are occasionally used.

Choosing A, B and 1a risks charlatanry, or increases the percent of the audience choosing to be spectators only. The A framing eliminates most of the Role options. D does not allow for 1a, etc.

Some Performers seem to feel that having Others demonstrate some enhanced ability detracts from their own marketable image. If they think that then it is probably true for them.
But, the question of whether being Agent or Percipient requires greater ability or power is a matter of framing and massaging audience expectations.

Deciding which approach is more ‘entertaining” for your intended audience is beyond my meager prognostic abilities. Obviously, having a grand reputation may attract ticket buyers who only desire to see your unique combination of Role and Framing. But, how do you get there? Given the apparent desire of many to “ be entertained” it may be irrelevant that the performer does as long as the show is remembered as an enjoyable experience.

For the more intimate setting, or one in which the expectations of the audience is unknown; the choices of D-G may be ideal, with Roles of b and c the key to success.

Again, my intent here is to prompt each performer to consider the many options and be clear as to what they are doing. There is no right or wrong here, just a matter of being grounded in who you are and how you wish to be perceived.

Over many decades I personally have derived the greatest pleasure from F-3, but I am not trying to do this for a living.

NOTE: I have performed/demonstrated what most consider extraordinary or paranormal abilities for more than 60 years, in tens of thousands of situations. It is only in recent decades that there is some demand that I separate these activities into mental-magic vs mentalism, for entertainment or other purpose, as psychic or metaphysics, or even amateur vs professional. This is amusing in a way and sad in another. The very idea that I must conform to the desires and fears of others seems in contradiction to the entire idea of "extraordinary ability." The study of why many people seek to be "average" or place themselves in a mental/ethical box has always been fascinating to me. Playing with the mystical arts allows me to probe that question. I do not choose "the road less traveled by," - I challenge the notion that I only have two choices.

nah - the ones that existed before Wiki and FaceBook work just fine.

I gather this means you feel I have used some term inappropriately. Which one(s)?

I realize you feel called to post something negative about any post I make, so your task is done.

Now, do you have anything substantive on any of the ideas presented? I am always interested in you experienced opinions.

I, for one, respect that you have found an approach to mystical things that works for you, and can learn from your experiences.

In my dictionary, I wasn't seeing it as negative...

Just that if you invent your own terms then you create a distance between you and your message rather than a closeness, so that others may or may not understand what you are saying...

And I say that, because all of a sudden, you are asking people to understand your new terminology - and unless its helpful and easy and consistently used...it can be a hindrance...if you have ever played a really complicated boardgame, that's what I'm getting at...

basically - if you can describe (pretty much) anything in a more Hemmingway like way, then you capture more of the audience, because more of them will understand what you are getting at...

and you say:
"It is only in recent decades that there is some demand that I separate these activities into mental-magic vs mentalism, for entertainment or other purpose, as psychic or metaphysics, or even amateur vs professional. This is amusing in a way and sad in another. The very idea that I must conform to the desires and fears of others seems in contradiction to the entire idea of "extraordinary ability."

none of these things are demands or things you must do...they are perhaps the preferred way of things because it makes online communication easier and clearer. For example - I don't really perform "classic mentalism", so I have to make sure what I say is clear enough to enable others to understand why I don't.

Thanks for the clarification of view. Bit I still do not understand what "new terminology" you think I am defining.

I am not "asking people to understand" anything. (please don't project). I would like the experienced opinions of others
on the ideas of Role and Framing in presentations of things mystical. I have provided a framework to simplify responses.
Perhaps it is not complete enough, or another can do a better job.

I have attempted to clarify some concepts so that my opinions might not be confused or mangled as they have been in the past.
For me, "more of them will understand" because of an organized presentation, but I am not "defining" anything.

In the last part I am referring to many past postings saying things like, "You can't be a mentalist unless you believe ..." or "all magicians think ..."
or "everyone knows it is all about entertainment ..."

Here you have used/invented the term "classic mentalism" and I am not sure what that means to you or to others. Why aren't the effects I did before you were born "classic?"
Why are some some early mental-based performers cheered as pioneers and other ignored?

"preferred way of things" by whom? Who got to define it that way? I don't agree that any of those artificial constructs make anything cleared or ease communication.
(opinion) lowering the bar so that anyone can trip over it does not equate to improvement. (joke)

But, on theme here, Iain, do you have any thoughts on the ideas presented in my post. I feel you understand very well what I presented.
How about dealing with the ideas of Role and Framing? As poor as you feel my offered organizational structure is, surely you have some thought thereon.
Please quit shooting the messenger and deal with the topic.

Sure...i won't go into detail, but just in the first couple of paragraphs....

never heard of a "caress of telepathy", "agent" or "conductor". I guess that you've come up with those terms yourself, or if you've read them in mentalism books - great...if you could name-check them, that might be handy...

And the terminology of shielding too, I understand that one - but you're saying everyone has one/the ability to shield. That's an opinion (whether its a personal one or a performance one, I'm guessing both). So if its used as part of the performance, using it as part of your initial intro to how "you" work and what you believe takes place....great...give people examples that they can identify with...i mean, if you told me, my brother, friends that we have this shield (in this context) no one would accept that as true...

another example is your terminology of "a soothing"...i now understand the meaning because I've tried to read your posts, but to an outsider - open to interpretation...which can be useful, but can also backfire, right? (for example, some semi-obscure 60s soul involves the term 'soothe me baby', do you want that in your mental mix?)

i used "classic mentalism" as its been used a bit on here, Bob Cassidy started to use it, and others - meaning performing mentalism as advocated by the "golden age" of mentalists (the idea that it could all be real and the presentations are from a certain mindset/angle)....

anyway - don't listen to me, you have your opinions, I have mine...do what you fancy...but, if you do it on an open forum, please expect others to ask questions or be silly Smile

Thanks for the clarifications. Now, do you have any thoughts on the theme of my posts.

The terms "Agent" and "Percipient" come from Barry, who I believe is also from England.
"Shielding" is a common term within writings about telepathy. I offer it as a possible Framing idea - one of many.
Others may use a different term for what they feel, but it is mu opinion that most people think they can protect against mind reading in some way.
It is a concept that I feel any serious mentalist should consider in guessing what an audience might expect.

I may have erred in thinking that serious mentalists study subject outside the writings of other mentalists.
In the same way, you perhaps err in thinking many on the Café' had read Hemingway. Smile

But now I get it. You feel that the only authority on telepathy is noted mentalists, notable meaning that other mentalists think they are.
Sounds like a religion to me.

Hemingway said, ""Let those who want to save the world if you can get to see it clear and as a whole. Then any part you make will represent the whole if it's made truly."
Yup - sure is clear and concise. The first line is not even a proper sentence.

But, you do understand what "Role" and "Framing" mean for a performer, right?

Please comment on those and not writing style.

yes, but caressing ideas can be soooo invigorating and not very risky.

then again, in a movie a guy caressed a stone and he got lucky.
