Hi everyone. I am going to be one of many employees on a promotional video for my work. I believe it's a montage of employees commenting on aspects of our company and how it may help advance the exploration of space, since we build rockets for launching people and satellites into space.
I wanted to be unique and somehow incorporate a coin production into my segment since it may only be a short clip. Something like "blah blah blah, and suddenly we make access available to everyone", and cue the fingertip coin production. I like this one coin production from Tim Feher called One Coin 2.0, I believe, where a quick cover of a pinched thumb and index finger results in a flash production of a dollar coin. Heck, I could even do a simple flash paper production. Do you guys think this is cool? If you were given a chance to do a quick coin production what would you do? Alternatively, I was going to maybe do CMH rubber band penetration in the context of breaking the bonds of earth's gravity or the limitations of space travel. I don't think I'll have enough time to do a whole routine, like a 3 Fly variation, or coins across. I appreciate your comments, especially if any of you may have done something like this for TV or on one of your videos. |

Hi Norm,
That sounds fun. SpaceX? I think before you spend too much time on this, you should figure out how much time you're actually going to get in the reel - a lot of montages are just half second clips of folks, since there will be liberal editing. If that's the case, a production would probably get cut, since for it to be impactful it would have to be much longer - otherwise without a first display, it just looks like you're pushing a coin to your fingers. Same thing with CMH if you don't first show them together clearly. It's possible you can get them to show that much time of you, but unless you're pretty sure, working on something that would be appropriate is hard without a sense of the requirements/limitations. And unless it connects very strongly with the theme/message they want the video to have, it'll probably get dropped. I think the opportunity sounds really cool, but I admit I don't really see the parallel of a coin appearing and something being available to the masses. I might actually suggest reaching out to some coworkers (perhaps the team making the video?) to get thoughts on appropriate metaphors/visuals, and then figure out what you need to do to make it happen ... again contingent on the timing. I hope that helps. Let us know what ends up happening! |

Not SpaceX, I used to work there though! The time on video will be long enough for some sort of quick trick for sure. The point of the video is to get perspective from employees on our company, or whatever event they are prepping this for. Also, I've already talked to the director of the video and he knows I want to do something and is excited at the prospect.
Someone suggested that I do a quick production, muscle pass (anti gravity thing you know?), and then vanish. that should only last a few dozen seconds at most. I'll keep you all posted. |

Ahh, I hadn't thought of the anti-gravity coin; I tend not to use it as a demonstration like that for my own style.
But it would be a great metaphor for rockets. If you do any thread work, that could be neat to add to represent space. |

I would suggest that you consider a few things
- is this the image you want to portray of yourself - is this image your company wants to portray to its customers - is your boss "ok" with this : John

It sounds like you might have several seconds --- why not do a quick flurry of vanishes and reproductions? (Maybe don't even tie it in to what you are saying; just do it WHILE you are talking about rocket science, space exploration, etc. In other words, DON'T make a conscious effort to tie it in with your larger message. It might be interesting.)
If you only have a few seconds, you might want to do a Down's Palm production of the largest coin you can comfortably conceal in the last two seconds of your speech. Just ideas; oh, and I agree with John Long (I almost always do!), it is good that you got the ok from your boss. |

I did the video / interview the other day, and had very little time to insert any tricks. However, since my reputation preceded me (I've done tricks for their coworkers), they specifically asked me to do a few tricks for the camera. I did what I said I'd do - production, muscle pass, and retention vanish. I also showed them CMH, but that was mainly because they wanted to see more. The director seemed giddy about the tricks and reshot the coin production a couple of times. He said (likely jokingly) that they want to do a whole segment with me at a future time just doing magic. We'll see what actually makes it to the final edit.
