Hi All, so my 10 yo daughter is giving me a hard time to replace a trick I had when she was about 5. I believe the trick is called candy cane. It consisted of a vanishing cane and a clear tube that you put the cane into, magic word or two and the cane changed to candy that could then be handed out!
Anyone know what this is and if it is still available? Thanks James |

Yup! My friend, the late Ali Bongo (UK magician) in what I believe was his first lecture tour here in the US,in the early '70s, had a clever idea. He filled a Walsh Vanishing Cane with candy. (I think it was M&Ms, but, I'm not absolutely sure). He showed the cane, inserted it into a transparent plastic tube (about 1 1/2" in diameter, and, held the cane up in front of his chest. The cane instantly and visibly, changed to candy!, which he poured into a bowl, and, passed it around.
Walsh canes are scarce, but, there are other vanishing canes. M&Ms (or other candy is available. Plastic tubing is available.

Thank you for the response Dick, that sounds like the exact trick!
Do you know where I might be able to source the clear tube? |

Look in your local candy stores and Dollar Shops. At this time of year, candy frequently comes in a clear transparent tube or one decorated for the nearest holiday. Another source is your stationery store, for transparent mailing tubes. One last source I can think of is Home Depot or other hardware stores that sell fluorescent lamps and may have transparent tubes that are used to protect them.

Check the YELLOW PAGES for stores that sell plastic material.

I second Jim’s suggestion. Saw fluorescent tubes at Home Depot for a few bucks the other day. 8 feet long and can be cut to any size.
