Which one do you have?
"Word in a Million" can be done with books for younger Kids. You still need to pick an older Kid who can follow directions and write clearly. I give the Spectator an old fashioned fat pencil (like we got in Kindergarten) with no eraser. They have a nice fat writing surface. -Mary Mowder |

I have Mark Masons word in a million.
Not sure how a book test would go over for the kids. I've done these libraries for yrs an this yr want to do some kind of trick with the books. Like show a book then open it up an pull out a live dove. Looking for suggestions. Thank you for yours. |

You don't need to do a standard "Book Test" to make use of a Book to pull a word from someone's mind ... out their ear. The purpose of the Book is just to have a child choose a word he or she knows, and then have them copy it down on a 3" x 3" card, fold the card in half and then in half again, paper clip it closed to seal it and drop it into a bottle for a friend of theirs to hold and guard. Then you make a big deal about looking inside the child's head through their ear, perhaps using a telescope or a toilet paper tube. You write down the word you see, letter by letter on a pad, and give the pad to someone else to hold. The jar is opened, the child's paper is dumped out and given back to him to peek at if he or she needs to verify that the word is still there, and then they say the word aloud and show the paper on which the word was written to the audience. The other child turns the pad around and shows a word on the pad - but it's all wrong... or is it? You hold the paper up to a light and show that you just saw their word written backwards inside their head, because seen from the other side of the paper through the light it can be seen frontwards. You could also have them go up to a mirror, if they have one in the library, and read the word in the mirror.
Since the purpose of the book is to just make sure the child chooses a word and can write it down correctly, you can have a child go a shelf of books and pick out their favorite book to use, and then you get to ask them why they like that book and if they would recommend it to others, etc. Librarians love that stuff and getting the kids interested in reading books is the only reason they keep hiring you year after year. Changing the subject a bit, another good library trick with books is to have the librarian gather a few magic books from their collection before the show and place them out where the kids can find them. Before the show, pick a trick from one of the books and make sure you perform it in your show, and at the end announce that they can learn how to do that magic trick from one of the books on display, but they'll have to search and find it themselves if they want to learn to do it. Leave the librarian with a note telling them which book and what page so they know the answer and can help the child find it if necessary. If you are booked to return to the library you can challenge the kids to use the library books to learn to perform one magic trick and that when you return you will call on them to come up during your show and perform that trick in your show. Arrange with the library for you to spend some time with those kids who accept your challenge before your show so you can check them out and make sure they don't mess up. That also makes sure that if they chose a trick you planned to do yourself, you let them do the trick instead of having it repeated by you. Things like this make sure that you become the library's regular magician - no others need apply!

Thanks Jim.
All great advice! I use the library card trick and always talk about learning form the library books ect. I just never have used the books in my shows there and thought it would be different. Years ago (about 20 yr) I saw a magician open book show a few pages closed the book and opened it back up and a bird flew out. Cant seem to find it anywhere with searches. I like your ideas. Too bad I sold my WIZ Cote. I could have used it with a book. Hope the ideas keep coming! Thank you |

For any experienced dove magician, the book would just be a prop to assist in the production of a dove; you could have any kid hand you any book, open it and produce the dove. If you feel you have to have a prop book (not just any old book in the library) you can make one yourself using the directions in my e-Book from The Wizards' Journal #33.
Flames are optional and not advised in a public library! A ready-made version of a book that will ONLY produce a dove can be found on e-Bay for about $25.00.
