Very easy to gimmick the deck one stage further to do this everytime . Once stripped riffle front edge confirms to you yes or no . If no a natural cut to the table solves this problem Tom

Sorry. I do like to give credit where credit is due. Over the years I have tried a plethora of iterations on OOTW. They are not all bad. Some are quite good. But I think a lot of us are looking for the elusive holy grail on this effect.
Now I admit Dunn's Deal looks super streamlined. And for those who can master the move, I'll bet it is. But like most of us, I only have so much time in my life to master moves. And this one has beat me. But all is not lost. If I can do a decent, even BEYOND decent rendition of the effect, I'll let my little heart be happy and move on to other effects. Like Dan Harlan said in his "Lester" routine, one can not waste their life on wishing.
The difficult must become easy, the easy beautiful and the beautiful magical.

If you have tried the same deck you first bought or even another you may have bought later in magic (like I went from an old "Fox Lake" deck to a deck made with "Bikes" (and I have bought a couple in Bikes over the years from a local shop and online). I don't know who made the deck of Bikes but it wasn't much better than the old cheap "Fox Lake" deck). Even newer decks today are usually mass produced and the range of "cut depth" varies greatly. I have seen good ones but I have seen way more bad ones. I have made several of my own using an inexpensive trimmer I made from online directions from James P. Riser. I have made both "regular" and "end s#####ers". Using my own cuts, I can find the sweet spot that gives me that near 100% accuracy. Also, you might want to try a Phoenix Brand deck of this type. The depth is perfect making the sweet spot work accurately and the back design has been tweaked to match the trim. In other words, the borders are the same all around so it does not look awkward with a fairly deep cut (yet not enough that a spec would notice). Also, I just received an email from Conjuring Arts about a new deck they made in their "Superior Brand Skull and Bones Decks" It is a reverse of the normal way these are made. Instead of cutting "down" one edge, they just designed the deck to be "wider" than a normal deck on one end. I am not sure how well this will look (or work for that matter) but I see the potential. It would work like a normal gaff deck but they say it was designed this way so you could throw - the Aces, for instance, into a normal deck and control them easily. It may be worth a try. There is now an introductory sale and there is also a special on 1 gaff deck with 1 regular deck right now. I would recommend trying a Phoenix Deck. It truly is the best - bar none - deck of this type I have ever seen or used. (Although I will probably try out the Superior type if they ever make it in "Classic Back" design. Hope this helps. It seems to me that the deck is the main part that will make or break this effect from what I have gathered so far. I do not have this one but I have used mine for Cosmos Duo. If Penguin ever decides to offer this as a "Download only", I will certainly pick it up but I am not in the market for another one of these decks (plus shipping) when I already have several.

Valid points. Another reason why there should be a download only option.

Thanks for the advice PD. I think I'll try this with a Phoenix deck. Might even spring for one of the Conjuring Arts decks.

The problem with this kind of effect is once the spectator separates the cards, the more handling, cutting, mixing that appears to the spectator, the worse it looks.

Those were good tips concerning the Phoenix deck. Might be willing to give it a shot. Where could I get a Phoenix deck in the necessary gimmick?
I never considered that it may not be me, but rather the quality of the deck itself. Was sure it was just me! I mean it's not like I didn't give it my best shot. Dozens and dozens of times, that is.

Dozens and dozens Daffy ? Really you need 6 months of proper practice to get things down to a professional level in my view . Yes you may get it quicker but if you put the work in you will eventually get the chops and you will realise that then only with dedication and hard work . I know 2 magicians with no hands just stumps who can do this move seamlessly and it’s very very humbling Tom

Like for ACAAN, I've tried over the years so many versions of OOTW, that I can't remember all of them. Since a few years however, I always do the same version, with a regular deck, that I learnt from Derren Brown in his "Dead or Alive" trick. I don't know if this technique must be credited to him or another. I've just reverse-engineered a video performance, without buying anything.
Anyway, I shuffle the cards, the spectator deals them into 2 piles, they are sorted. This how the trick is perceived, very streamlined, no funny move (only 1, very easy and very bold), and a borrowed deck. I'm still very tempted to buy, because I'm like an addict with all these ACAAN/OOTW tricks, but at the same time, I really think I found the more perfect version of the effect that I could possibly found, and I can do it anytime anywhere with any deck of cards. Is the gimmick something we may already have ? Or is it a special deck (I don't use any) |

Just curious if the folks having trouble with the move have watched my explanation of how to do it?
If you have, and are still having trouble, maybe I can help. |

Dan,
I have a different question than the one about "the move". Could you ask them at Penguin why they cannot offer a download only version since the gaff is soooo common and someone like myself who uses non-bikes wont use it anyway? I would gladly pay in the $10 - $15 range for a download only version. that would save me the cost of a normally $7.50 gimmick deck and shipping of a physical product. I also think sales overseas would go up immensely. The same issue has come up on this as well as several other effects in the past that use "very common gaffs" Maybe they would listen to you. (I know I do)

I use Belly Strippers when doing this effect as the cards can be dropped turned anyway around and still works great Tom
