Hello everyone,
I'm going to be in New Orleans the 9 through 13th of April and was wondering what all places I needed to go to see some good buskers and some good magic shows. Was also wondering if any magicians wanted to meet up or there was any clubs meeting during that time |

Call Jon Racherbaumer. He "hosts" an informal weekly"gathering", usually at a restaurant.
New Orleans has had an IBM Ring, and an SAM Assembly, for years, but, as far as I know, they are both losing membership. I can't get to my email addresses, without shutting down the Café. When I get tired of reading the Café posts, I'll get it, and send it to you. Buskers work in the French Quarter. I haven't been in NO for about 10 years, so I'm not "up to date" on what's current. Did Schulien's book get there yet? O

New Orleans is great for buskers. Jackson Square, right by the Saint Louis Cathedral is the prime spot. Last time I was there I saw a jazz band, a great Cyr wheel acrobat, a not so great juggler, and lots of magicians. Most of the magicians down there do pretty much the same thing (lots of drawn out ambitious card routines) but you'll see a decent variety. Also lots of fortune tellers down there if you're into that kind of thing.

Thank you Mr. Oslund. Is Jon Racherbaumer a member here on the Café. I would love to be able to contact him. I've been looking into SAM and IBM and SAM should be meeting when I'm in town I just need to make contact. I'm definitely interested in the French Quarter that will be fUn. Haven't made it home yet to check on the book. Thanks Thomas I'll check those places out. Not really into the fortune tellers.

In case you don't know, Jackson Square is in the French Quarter area. So it's super easy to wander around in between watching the various buskers. Right next to the square is the original Café Du Monde' which serves french doughnuts and coffees 24 hours a day. The place is frozen in time, as they still serve coffee and doughnuts, full service at your table, on ceramic plates. (There is of course a to-go window as well).
Also.. don't miss a ride on the St. Charles Streetcar line. The red streetcars that run up and down canal street are modern cars that look old... the green cars that run on the St. Charles Line are the real deal, dating back to the 1920's or so. You'll go through several neat neighborhoods and it's a really special experience, I think. |

Hi...
Jon Racherbaumer's street address: 838 Pacific Ave New Orleans, LA 70174-1302 I can't find his phone #!!! >>>HE IS ON FACEBOOK.<<< You can try the Café, but, I don't believe he is on the Café. HE calls ME, when he is not busy writing! Irwin Royes lives in Metairie, I think. He would know Jon's #, or at least be able to give you info. about the weekly meeting. I don't have his phone # either. We keep in touch spasmodically, by the Café--try PMing him. Tell him you know me. I'll try contacting Jon via facebook. He checks in there occasionally. They were meeting on Monday nites, but, may have changed... Sorry I don't have his phone #!!! When are you leaving for NO?

If you want beignets I recommend Morning Call in the Park over Café Du Monde. Though I also think everyone should hit up Café Du Monde at least once. Preferably at about 3 AM after a night of bar hopping, but that's just me.

Thank you for finding that our Mr. Oslund. Do you know what time they begin meeting. I'm gonna make time for it. I also received the book. Have only perused it but it looks interesting. Also thank you for the lit match vanish. The sequence of movements is really good for "moving things around"

When you order beignets at the Café Du Monde, they come 3 to an order.
I forgot this since I'd lived there...ordered 3...got 9.

And, don't wear your best dark blue suit! You'll get powdered sugar all over it!
RE Jon's "party" They usually start a little after the dinner hour. They use a 'side room'. I suggest about 7 PM They quit about 1030 usually...possibly later I suggest plan on eating something.

If you want to hit a great jazz brunch buffet while you're there and sample all of the great New Orleans food in one place, hit the Court of Two Sisters on Royal Street (and I believe it also has an entrance on Bourbon St). Good food, good jazz music, an all around cool place !!! Enjoy yourself !!!
