In any magic square the spec never HAS to reveal the target number before the square is filled out but patapon was asking about the differences and similarities between two products and with the Tenyo Miracle Magic Square routine, the participant openly selects a pre-printed two digit number on a seperate sheet by circling it, whereas with the Executive Grid, a more traditional choice of number is used. Also in the Executive Grid instructions we explain how the effect can be repeated multiple times with different numbers populating the cells each time, even if the same target number is given. As mentioned earlier, both items provide a way of performing the magic square without any memory work. By the way, I am not playing-down the Tenyo Miracle Magic Square at all, as people that I know who own it say it is terrific. I am just letting patapon know that both products are different from each other. Paul McCaig.

Dear Paul,
Thanks very much for your feedback. Much appreciated. From what I saw in the Tenyo trailer, the SPEC secretly chooses a number (ie. does not reveal it to the MAG), and the MAG is able to fill out the square to match the number. I'm not sure if the effect has a way for the MAG to know which number the SPEC secretly selected though. From the Grid's trailer, it looks like the MAG has to know the SPEC's chosen number in order to fill up the square. So I guess my question was really - which effect allows the MAG to fill out the square without knowing the SPEC's choice? I prefer an effect where the MAG can fill up the square without knowing the SPEC's choice as this "looks like magic", whereas when the MAG fills up the square after knowing the number chosen by the SPEC, it "looks like someone who is good at math". Hope this makes sense ;-) |

Both products are designed to ideally be performed with a mentalism/mindreading presentation, where the performer is 'apparently' unaware of the participant's chosen target number. I cannot risk exposure by going into any detail, however it is safe to say that because of the almost self-working nature of the Tenyo Miracle Magic Square, a beginner can very easily and automatically gain this information, whereas if using the Executive Grid, a basic knowledge of mentalism ploys and techniques are required to acquire the secret target number. So it really depends on your performing style and what you are more comfortable with. Please feel free to pm or email me. All the best, Paul McCaig.

Been performing magic for over 40 years but have never before performed a Magic Square routine. I have to admit that I knew absolutely nothing about them. My assumption had always been that they required a lot of memory work. Have to admit also that the effect itself had never appealed to me very much. I knew nothing about it simply because I had absolutely no interest in it.
But as you get older your tastes and opinions often change. What really appealed to you at age 20 may not appeal to you at 50, and vice versa. So recently I had a change of heart about the Magic Square and found it intrigued me as it never had before. So when I saw the Executive Grid I liked this idea of a pocket sized reusable grid that had a built-in crib. The “hidden in plain sight” crib was appealing because I was still under the impression that it would require a ton of memory work. I thought it important to provide a little backstory and make it clear that I was a Magic Square novice. So you would know that when I received The Executive Grid recently it was my first encounter with anything related to a Magic Square. Even though I have nothing else to compare it to I really like this prop a lot. I discovered there isn’t nearly as much memory work required as I had thought, but still plenty enough for my aging brain so the built in crib is a lifesaver. I’m not going to be doing this 20 times a week so there is no way I’d be able to remember what I would need to. This is a very cool little prop and serves its purpose very well. It’s simple and looks innocent and is very well designed and well made. With care it should last a very long time. I also like that it includes both written and video instructions. I wish more manufacturers did that. I’m really happy with it and feel it is a great deal for the price. Highly recommended! |

Another way to openly obtain the number, while still maintaining an element of mystery, is as stated in Will Dexter's discussion of the MS in his "Feature Magic for Mentalists," wherein he simply asks two spectators each to name a single digit. If, for example, 3 and 4 are called out, the mentalist can then ask whether he should use 34 or 43. (Note: I have purchased Executive Grid and do use it).

I prefer the old fashioned piece of paper, improvised method. It then becomes a souvenir. It’s very easy to remember the number sequence.
