I was up late one noght when my fingers started typing and this is what they did...I am experiencing a Brain freeze as to where to go with is,...Help
Some things defy description. Some can’t be explained. Perhaps our frail understanding of the world around us that is delivered to our conscious by or senses is lacking. There is a higher place a elevated plane where consciousness and reality are absent a place where flesh and bone no longer exist. They who have passed on are waiting for recognition from the world the once called home and an understanding of their existence or non existence. They cry out I AM HERE!!! but none hear them. Don’t believe me then lets try to communicate. Take a trip, not longer trust what we see or feel to be normal. Take a trip to another reality. Are you with me? Do you dare? Some say death is the end some a step or crossroad to another existence. Lets find out what’s out there...Shall we. I need a volunteer. Not for human offering or mutilation but to try a little experiment. To break down the walls of this waking world and cross over to the next...To finally communicate with the great beyond. Playing cards... The object of many a magical entertainer of times past. We shall use these as our tool to touch the other side. Which of the long past workers of magic were the first to utter those immortal world... Pick a card...Any card. Card who symbols are meaningless.. Hearts that no longer beat..Diamonds slipped of decaying finger long ago or were lifted by the robber for cheap wine or even cheaper company. Spades which no longer divide earth and clubs, not of violence but of flower brought forth from mother earth... Show all our vessel across the river Styx past the demons or angels to those who are waiting to be heard..... Please sign your name upon the face and return it to me....Great spirits long since past to another realm let us know you are here...Give us a sign.......Not upon all the cards but only on this one.... Please examine the card and look for an answer.. What does it say...I AM HERE... Working... there are a couple of ways to do this one is have a prepared card with the I AM HERE (Written in what may be blood?) Already in the deck. Not signed. Spread the cards face down to reveal the card or force Thanks, WR

Hi WR
One method you may like is "THE DARK CARD", which was put out by Gary Oulett, I think. Or at least by the Cameriad Acadamy. In it's original form, you use a red deck, someone chooses a card, signs it, returns it. You do ambitious card, or what have you, and then place the card in the centre, where it's back changes colour. It will easily produce writing instead, and is signed, and is handled by the spectators before and after the change. Liam. |

Many good word pictures there.
You are on interesting track for part of the prose. Why blood on a card? Why go the route of playing cards when you made the jump to the immateria? Have you read Promethia by Alan Moore?

I love the script, but also think the blood is not a good option. Why is that the “other side” has to be always macabre? For the contrary...

How about this?
Rather than blood, the original 'I am here' message, written in curly cursive, is reversed, and needs to be held to a mirror to be understood. In candlelight, it is lifted to a mirror, and reflected therein, the words from beyond can now be plainly seen, written on the face of the card. Then you put the card down, face-up on the table, and as people go to examine it, with a jolt they realise that not only is the writing reversed on the card, but so also are the pips, the numbers, and their locations. You could suggest this mirror-like quality to the world beyond, subtly in your introduction, and allow people to draw their own conclusions at the end of the effect. Then you could explore this 'Mirror World' more closely with something like 'Twilight', or 'A Twisted Palm' where the lines on the hand start to warp, flip over and slew when viewed in the mirror. (Anyone who has trouble 'seeing' Luke's effect, might find it easier to see in candlelight, and viewed in a small mirror.) Regards, Caleb Strange.

Exploring the mirror idea a little further, you could turn the idea over.
You show a stack of index cards, bearing several messages from the otherside of the mirror? One is chosen, (forced) and the mirror reveals it, by having the message appear on it's face... Using the chemicals you can pick up, you can breath on the mirror, causing the message to appear. Just an idea, Liam. |

Both ideas using the mirror are great.

Ahh shucks! I'm glad you liked it . I seem to remember 'Doc' Shiels' had an effect with a mirror message in 'Bizarre', called 'Automatism', where the word HEX behaved oddly, when reflected in a mirror.
Liam's (Hi, mate - how you doing?) idea is a great one. And, also, as someone recently pointed out (I believe it was the inestimable Peter Marucci) , mirrors also can be used in a similar fashion to slates. Regards, Caleb Strange.

Not blood... ink.
The message appears in a smudging the design on the back of the card, as if from INSIDE the card itself, something rearranged the ink in an attempt to communicate.

Like Mr. Townsend, I'm intrigued by your imagery. Here's a different effect than the one you describe, which would retain most of your fascinating dialog and have a similar meaning, i.e. "a spirit reveals itself in the cards."
The effect is Francis Carlyle's "The Card That Finds Itself", Hugard's Card Manipulations, p.152. A card is chosen and returned, you do a brief shuffle. The deck is spread and a reversed card seen (a Six of Clubs, for example). It's not the selection. The reversed card and all those above it are set aside. Starting with the next card, six cards are counted and the sixth is shown to be the selection. As I envision it: Deliver all dialog up to and including "We shall use these as our tool to touch the other side." At this point, have the card selected. Do the necessary work as you take up your dialog again at "Which of the long past workers of magic...", etc (if you're interested, I have a method I find a bit cleaner than Carlyle's original handling). Stop after the line "Show all our vessel across the river Styx past the demons or angels to those who are waiting to be heard.....". Spread the cards to reveal the reversed card. "Is this your card?" They deny it is so. "Ah, but wait!" you say. "The spirits are known to speak cryptically, betimes." Pause for a brief moment as if to think what to make of all this. then begin to move hesitantly, as if you had just gotten a tenuous idea. "Hm, this card is a six..." Count down to the selection as described. "What card did you choose, by the way?" They name it. Slowly and dramatically turn the card.
There are many tricks, and many effects, but rarely a Grand Effect. There are many entertainers, but few real magicians. Many technicians, but few artists who use their art to explore their vision. - Derren Brown, Absolute Magic
