Been awhile since I posted something here. Time for another little favorite. This goes by several names but most commonly as "Mercursio". Simple effect with two small colored pencils, a matchbox and a piece of tissue paper. While your pack is turned one pencil is wrapped in tissue and put in the matchbox and one is hidden by the spectator in their pocket. You turn round and reveal the color of the pencil in the box or the one hidden.
I love the subtle hidden self contained method that allows you to discern the color ( a method that would be illegal now ). I found a beautiful old small walnut box used in an antique shop that was a perfect size for the pencils. It was originally used for matchsticks many years ago. I lined it red and blue as shown. One pencil is put in the box and one is hidden in a pocket... Then I was able to acquire (thanks Joe) a beautiful version in small metal gold and silver rods that resemble weights. I was thrilled to again find the perfect little silver box... it was also used many years ago to hold matches ... Makes a very elegant little mystery. Also have a plastic version using a similar method with three different colored sticks. There are other versions out there using dowels and nails. If you happen to see a unique set please let me know. Also if anyone has copies of original instructions would love a PDF. I have an idea for a version I want to make and if it works out will post here. Cheers, John |

Great pics, John! I've seen the original ad for this in an old 1985 copy of Genii. It sold for for $14.50 and was advertised as follows:
"One of the most exciting close-up mental effects youH ever see! The effect is that two small pencils are shown, one red and one blue. The spectator is then asked to wrap one in a piece of tissue paper and place it into a small empty match box; he is to hide the other pencil from view. This is done while the magician has his back turned. He is handed the box and without any “moves” or “questions” he immediately divines the color pencil in the box. This can be repeated, over and over, without any clue to how it’s done. The spectator can examine everything. The best part is that you will be able to do this effect five minutes after you receive it The instructions give you six different presentations. Each one is super. Highly recommended by all the leading magicians." I like the (intended?) play of words lead-ing mentalists in the last sentence.

Tracked down another version I did not own. Two un-sharpened pencils (India version)...
Also recently made my own version I quite like with customized mini Bic Pens... Pens are coded on the end red and blue but are the same (red) on the writing end... Spectator can hide ends in the cap and am able to tell which is red and which is blue... They can also completely hide one pen in the caps and one in their hand and you can still determine where the pens are... I like the self contained aspect of this set... was a fun little project John |

This is my first post but I caught wind of this thread back in May last year and I immediately new I had to have this Idol in my collection! This was one of my favourite Tenyo tricks and the pictures on this thread took it to another level, thanks for sharing. Eric has been fantastic to deal with and has experimented with a 'green man' version for me as well as including the idol that looks great in this post. Due any day, I too will share pictures when it arrives.

Have I been under a rock somewhere? How have I missed this thread and Eric's Eye of the Idol.
I just stumbled up his work this am. And before even seeing this thread, sent him an order, sight and price unseen. After having The Tenyo Eye for so long, and then seeing this,,,, I want to cry. It's amazing, and is exactly what the Elite team should have been doing from day one. Eric, whoever you are, wherever your are, BRAVO & WELL DONE!!! Ed |
