Goulish Greetings dark mystics,
I am listening to the audio component of a really interesting ebook that I just got. It's very exciting, but I was surprised that while skimming (and searching) the .pdf I didn't find any mention of Poke Runyon and his "The Book of Solomon's Magick" relying, as it does, on the same methodology. This is not a criticism of the ebook, I knew that part of the method from the description and it's the surrounding stuff I want to hear about, but it did make me curious as to whether Runyon was known amongst Bizarrists or not. It seems like he should be. Does anyone know his work? ...has anyone incorporated into a performance!? For anyone unfamiliar Runyon is the founder of the Order Templi Astarte, a ceremonial neopagan group, and is most famous for his method of summoning the demons of the goetia into a dark mirror and making them visible through a mixture of hypnosis, yoga training and facial distortion. He also has an interesting podcast with some great info (did you know that Blavatasky's Tibetan 'secret chiefs' were REAL people, who were Indian, and that whole story was invented to protect their identities!!!!???? ...that was a digression, but mind gets reblown each time I think about it, because of all the implications and successive... ....sorry, never mind).

I’d be surprised if Runyon was unknown amongst this group, too. That being said, I never made the link between his Solomonic mirror and performance magic. But is seems glaringly obvious now that you mention it. Having it work theatrically and consistently would take a better performer than me. Nice reference, what was the ebook?

That makes sense. His work might be taken as a given, and emphasis on developing things like a yogic unblinking gaze don't make it seem like something for the public (not that his scryers in his demo videos actually demonstrate said non-blinking ...just saying). I have used some similar ideas, and some similar to the invocation of the archangels, but not the actual dark mirror stuff.
I didn't get a chance to finish the audio, probably have to wait a day or two, but from my first impressions the ebook looks wonderful. It is "The Roxanne Effect," by Brynmore. https://www.geminiartifacts.com/collecti......e-effect

It doesn't seem like this isn't much of a topic of interest, but I should just mention that the Roxanne effect is MUCH more than facial distortion (more to the effect and to the important bits about making it work), and Poke Runyon is only mentioned as a topic of interest related to it.

Seadog93,
Thanks so much for your kind words about the Roxanne Effect. I did think of Roxy when I read your first post. Because I was into Occultand Esoteric practices long before mentalism and magic, I do tend to want my creations to come across as as real as possible. And part of that means a lot of research into real spiritual traditions so that even if you perform for folks who are heavily into these traditions, you can do so with confidence. Runyon's stuff sounds interesting, I shall have to check it out. |

I have now listened and read through everything, and I would go so far as to say, from an esoteric point of view this is absolutely real, just presented in an extremely effective and compelling way that will entertain (delight/comfort/terrify as you so choose) your participants. Very exciting. Quote:
Runyon's stuff sounds interesting, I shall have to check it out. I think he's pretty interesting. He has two videos that he used to sell (I think I still have a VHS copy somewhere!) that demonstrate and discuss what he does. From a performer's perspective they probably give everything you might need. Be warned that Poke's narrations is extremeley melodramatic (he always reminds me of a Will Ferrel Character from SNL, but I can't remember the character's name) and the rituals, while interesting from a technical point of view, are far from inspiring to watch (as is the case with almost all video recorded rituals, IMO). Still, pretty interesting: This is the companion video to the book, which discusses the history of his technique and demonstration of his angelic invocation and goetic evocation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpV7wfwMIiE This documentary which, to be honest, I have never watched all the way through, discusses Poke's method and (big selling point!) has a real full evocation recorded for the first time. If I recall correctly, this evocation was better filmed than the above, although the 'prophesy' delivered was controversial at at the time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiOtUYOX7cU
