I agree with opening with yourself so how about humoring the OP and give up your second best opener.

Right you are, Johnnyboy. I didn’t even look at post count. Thanks for the reminder on that.

I am surprised that a number of Café members are informing someone on an open forum who has exactly one post how to accomplish something that he may have only seen and wants to know how it is done. No vetting at all. Notice the original poster has not responded to any of the posts yet, or has contributed at all to the Café community. While it is nice to be helpful, we should still be mindful of our obligation to all of our fellow performers to maintain an appropriate level of mystery and discretion regarding our art.

I couldn't agree more and have been thinking this since the very first post.

Everyone just freely tossing out effects without context (with something so subjective) or concern. Seems no one is interested in teaching him how to fish, but rather just toss your opinion of your favorite fish.

What Philemon said. Prediction effects, being generally less plausible to the typical lay mind than (say) memory, telepathy, and influence effects, are more usually (and logically) performed nearer then end of a performance than the beginning.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding but isn't the influence approach only compatible with predictions? Isn't that the underlying concept of "influence", to make you choose something I already know? Again, I may be misunderstanding but to say "Prediction effects are less plausible than influence effects" seems nonsensical to me, am I wrong?

If you are going to use a prediction effect as your opening, then you should probably limit it to something that appears to have a 50-50 chance.

That way it's quite plausible that you just got lucky, and you can then structure your show where you build up to harder ("less probable") predictions.

I'll disagree here. I won't get into an in-depth conversation but will just refer to what Darwin Ortiz refers to as "scope" in his Stronger Magic book. 50/50 is fine for a casual type environment but to open an act? No way, you'll get a portion of people who will immediately tune out and you won't be able to get them back. 1 in 4 would be the least I would recommend, and it would still have to be remarkably entertaining.

I had the same opinion, maybe he saw Derren's Wicked TV show (which opens with an animal divination). However, he did sign up in 2015, so it's not like he just signed up last week and asked the question. Having said that, this type of conversation should be, in my opinion, down below.

Best wishes,

Sorry guys I ve been on Holiday and just got back.

It appears I’ve offended some people with my question, this wasn’t my intention nor am I just trying to “Find Out Secrets”. I only wanted to be pointed in the right direction and didn’t want people telling me how to do stuff. I have and always will pay for secrets, books, lessons etc...

No one on the thread in my opinion has divulged secrets but only giving me names and titles. This has been most helpful and I thank you for helping me out.

I decided to purchase Any Word, I believe this is a good opener for me to use.
