I couldn’t find a good area to post this request under so I put it here.
I’m a 12 year old magician, a member of the SYM. I have to do a church show this summer in Atlanta, Georgia. Does anyone have any ideas for ways to come onstage besides just walking out. I am on a low budget (not large enough for an appearance illusion). Please give me some ideas. Thank you! |

Have someone set off a firecracker in the back and when everyone turns around to look, that's your misdirection to run out onstage. When everyone turns back around, there you are, standing triumphantly with your arms spread, waiting to start your act.

A zombie ball routine to music makes a nice opener.

A nice opener to start is the bowling ball from brief case. First of all, I hope you have some music, then walk out on stage with a briefcase, place it on a table, open it up and take out the bowling ball.
This sends a positive first impression to your audience. Also there is a great booklet with lots of good advice put out by Samuel Patrick Smith called "On Stage, Bringing Out the Better Performer in YOU" lot's of good advice.

You need an assistant/helper or MC, a chair and a newspaper setup for the production. The helper nervously reads through the newspaper commenting on how it seems to "almost" grow in her hands. The paper folds out to a larger and larger size. The final size is large enough so that you can slip in behind it unnoticed. Then you can either lower the newspaper and show that you have appeared or with a little more difficulty, you can trade places with your helper and do a transformation of the two of you. You can find it in Gene Anderson's "Newspaper Magic" book. Best of luck. Bob

A simple curtained cabinet would work and would be very cheap and easy to make.
Why do you not want to just walk on ? Most big names do. I think exploding fireworks would tend to distract the audience and you would then have to work to get them back. |

Armmagician-
I used these a few weeks back & worked very well. 1 - Providing there are curtains-Have them open at start of show& as you are being introduced have your assistant etc close the curtains as you walk with them keeping out of sight as they close stage lights off, as soon as your name is announced-time this with the MC etc, Have your assistant suddenly open the curtains & you appear centrestage with the curtains being open full again, stage lights on-simple but effective All your assistant is doing is closing & opening the curtains!! 2- when announced enter from the Back of the Hall & walk up & onto stage-works well 3- Again with curtains- prior to show have house lights on & stage lights off-when introduced have someone switch house lights off & you step forward between curtains centrestage & house & stage lights are switched on -you appear This is done very quickly 2-3 seconds-looks good -Brent |

Mark Wilson's Magic book has the "Doorway appearance" illusion which would cost a lot of money. It requires an assistant to show the door empty before you appear.

Also in Mark Wilson's is The Victory Carton appearance illusion. All you need are two fairly large cardboard boxes and an assistant or two. If you can't find boxes that large, you can buy them from a moving truck rental store like U-Haul (they sell boxes of all sizes, tape, etc.) for a very affordable price.

Find a hat you like and learn to work it. Twirl, slide flip, In what a Woman Wants Mel Gibson dose a bit with a hat. It is stylish and endearing.

Possibly come onto stage by going through the audience. Stand at the back and get their attention. Make a cane appear from some silks and then all you have to do is swagger up with your cane.
Very stylish. I did that for one of my performances, people suddenly respect you as you start to swagger. But don't be arogant. --art-- |

I second the door illusion which works well if you have a stage. I may also suggest that you try something from Darwins inexpensive illusions. to hard to explain. I looked up the nervous assistant from gene andersons book and wow did I miss that one hum will have to look at that one for my show>

Creating presence on stage is what is important. Above all fancy illusions and appearances, as effective as they are, sometimes a good strong theme tune that reflects your performance style is better than anything.
In Derren Brown's stage show he uses comedy to open his act saying something along the lines off "I can see you but you cant see me" while standing off stage. just experiment and see what works best for you.
