After years of neglect, it's great to see that Detroit's grand old train station
will finally get the love it deserves from it's new owner – the Ford Motor Co. It's a big big win for the city and for people who like to see historic architecture preserved. http://money.cnn.com/2018/06/17/news/com......dex.html

That just made my night.
Detroit is not Chernobyl. It's still a living, vibrant city. With a baseball team and everything. All this "ruin porn" trend of going around and looking at abandoned masterpieces of architecture as if...what? They weren't masterpieces of architecture? We ought to take better care of our past. |

Had the previous owner taken better care of the train station, it would cost far far less to restore.
Tomorrow Ford is hosting a press conference at the station to talk about their plans. Based on what I’ve already heard, there’s a big incentive on their part to do it right.

See, the thing is, neglect is like a disease: if no one seems to care, then no one seems to care. But the opposite is also. true: if people start showing that they care, then people care. They care about their world, their country, their City, their neighborhood, their house, their body. And they care in the other direction. What's missing is that our media always points in the other direction than how we live our lives. Start with what you eat tonight, and then your wife and kids, and then your garage, and move on. Stop watching the news to see how the world is effed up. Mow your lawn instead. Detroit is a beautiful city on the edge of reminding us to remove the log in our own eyes before pointing out the specks in the eyes of others. Great story, this. |

Jeff, That is a good story. Thanks for sharing.
In addition to the Train Station, several other buildings have been reinvented. Which is really great to see.

A clock face that was stolen from the building 20 years ago has been returned by the thief.
I'd be willing to bet that other building artifacts that went missing will start to show up again. The renovation of the building has touched the hearts of Detroit's citizens. My wife is a Detroit native. She used to love eating the shrimp at Dot and Etta's.

I was excited to learn Ford picked Snøhetta to lead the design for their new campus.
They’ve done some amazing work. https://snohetta.com/
