As for all of you who don't understand why I ,and others, don't buy those books:
I'm from Belgium, my language is Flemish. Not English. I now some basic English, so I can participate on forums etc., but I cannot read a whole book in English. That's too difficult for me. I need the visual aid. If these books got translated in Dutch, I'll surely buy them. I don't want to start an argument or a fight, but please understand that not everybody on this planet can read books in English.

I have to agree with Jeremy on this one. These are definitely not long, forgotten effects. Putting aside any discussion about whether or not videos of this type are helpful to magic by introducing newer magicians to older material or if they create hordes of unknowledgable clones, the list of effects on ETMCM 7, 8 and 9 seem less powerful then the ones from the first 6, specifically 4, 5 and 6.
Now back into the discussion. This is one of those arguments that everyone will have to agree to disagree because everybody is so entrenched into their respective ideas that nothing anyone says will change the others mind. Those that know me are well aware that I am very big into books, having ammased a sizeable collection. In fact, the only time I will watch a video now is when I want to see a performance that I would be unable to watch in person, such as the Michael Skinner tapes. That said, when I got into magic over a few years ago I learned from the first set of Ammar videos and I have been able to successfully avoid being a clone. It depends more on the person then the medium. |

Here's my take after 20 years of performing. I have tons of books and in all honesty, of all the books I have, I can only think of 2 in which I have taken more than one effect. ETMCM, love them or hate them, usually presents fairly strong, time tested material. Especially with volumes 4-6, I know I got at least 3 tricks from each that I use all the time. Thus, money well spent in my oppinion. As for other people in my area doing the same stuff, so what. It's rare for you ever to come in contact with a spectator who has seen more than one magician in their lifetime, let alone remember the tricks they saw. So I guess my bottom line after all these years is that I love books but I"m sick of filler. If I'm going to pay money, I want to be able to chose from strong material. ETMCM delivers in this regard.

I think you have the wrong books Do you have "Smoke and mirrors", "impossibilia", "The Secrets of Brother John Hamman", "Classic Magic of Larry Jennings"....? |

These might be his last in the series. He has said that he wanted these three volumes to be very strong in case they were to be his last. I guess you never know though.
Paul Harris works with Ammar on the series, so there will always be plenty of his material used by Ammar. To be honest I will purchase some of the new Ackerman stuff on DVD before this set as Otis Day stated earlier in this thread.

I do have Smoke and Mirrors and that is one of the books I got a few routines from. My point was just that I think it's way worse to sell a book full of fluff than it is to sell a dvd full of gems. It would be like saying I have to buy every Frank Sinatra album vs. just buying his greatest hits album. I could buy 15 albums just to get 8 good songs or I could buy one album and get the same songs. I could buy 15 magic books and get 8 good routines or I could buy a couple dvd's and get 20 good routines.

I'm not against those DVDs (I have 1-6). But, by buying only Sinatra's "Best of" you will miss tons of his great songs. (Songs you might like more than the songs in his best of album...) |

I have ETMCM's 1-6 by Ammar and The Classic Magic of Larry Jennings. If I could only put one on a rocket and launch into outer space for the aliens to find one day, it would be The Classic Magic of Larry Jennings without question in it's current printed form.

I find this really cool. But I don't quite know what all the effects are. does anybody know where I can find a list of effects that also EXPLAIN what the effects acctually are and if you need a table etc. to perform them. I checked L&L and here and I can only find the list of names. Can anybody direct me to somewhere where they are explained. Thanka lot

Then there is the issue of money. It would probably cost ten times as much to purchase all these books, provided you could find them in the first place. I don't know about you, but for me, bucks are hard to come by. Michael has done us all a favor by compiling these effects in one easy to access place. Besides, if you found and read the books, would you find in them Michael's excellent instruction and performing tips? I doubt it!!

Brother, I just call 'em as I see 'em! I tell you what. They can make all the intelectual arguments they wnat, I don't give a rat's furry but. All I care is that Ammar rocks, and to have him on my little portable dvd player in my lap, TEACHING me, with all his advice and subtleties that he generously shares, is worth more than it's weight in gold! I'm BUYING these videos, and a herd of horses could not stop me!
What it comes down to is this. I believe in Ammars good judgement when it comes to effects and selection of material. The man has never let me down before, and I don't believe he will let me down this time. Ammar is simply the best! BTW, all three at Hank Lees' are ninety bucks. Of course, there is always S + H, which is free at L&L.

I didn't care for volumes 7,8,9. The performances seemed very "forced". You can tell this was not card magic that Michael performed often, but learned them for the set.
I would not recommend these. |
