Loooooong time lurker
On ebay there's an offer for 10x STEEL morgan replicas (https://goo.gl/Gp5ReN); has anyone tried, I have concerns for how they talk, whats the weight, edge, smoothness like... These would be for practise, I lost all my (17) original 19th Morgans in a "Wow; wonder what's in that interesting silver case" incident : ( Am rebuilding the prop case and short on dollars (Pun massively intended)... |

One reason "why not" would be that from the link you gave, they don't appear to be marked as a "COPY". Given that the seller is in Hong Kong, I think technically you would then be importing them in violation of the Hobby Protection act (see link below that's also a "sticky" post in this forum):
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=3 Unlike a lot of replicas, *IF* they look like the ones pictured at the link you gave, those look pretty good. Many scream "fake" to anyone who's spent time with real Morgans which you say you have. In the comments I noted: "BUT the replicas are NOT steel and NOT the exact size." So there's a chance you won't quite get what's advertised. Hard to beat for the price if you don't mind being a scofflaw. An alternative might be to go with some copper rounds at a place like this: https://www.jmbullion.com/search/?q=roun......r&page=1 |

I am very impressed with your response to the initial post in this thread. It is succint, to the point and appears very accurate. It is a breath of fresh air to me to see this. Perhaps this is odd coming from me. But when I see a job well done, I must comment. I do the same when I see a cashier or waitress doing their job effectively. Very well done. Al

Good information given here, but I'd simply say for what you want to do as to "practice," this seems a pretty good deal...Go for it!
I've had several of these replica coins, and remember being one of first here early on to push replica Morgans as a much more affordable, viable option instead of at the time all these overpriced real Morgan sets, which were going outta control at the time. Nothing wrong with the real stuff, it's definitely best, but the costs were crazy! Glad some people listened a bit and began making all the same gaffed coins out of replicas that more people could afford and better get to enjoy for their magic, gaffed or ungaffed. So, as I said already here, "Go for it!" *Oh, and welcome to the Café.

Joe Mogar sells beautiful Morgan replicas - and they don’t have "Copy" stamped on them, so I guess I'm a scofflaw. And that doesn’t bother me at all!
http://joemogar.tripod.com/id24.html Scroll down until you see "Magical Morgans". They are ferromagnetic (attracted to magnets) and are $10 each. Add a shell for another $95. Jim |

Found four like those in a flea market here in Brussels, heads and tails are not aligned the same way as the original, hence it's not a copy... Color as well may change with time.

We are happy to have you rabbit...
The journey of it all is always what's most interesting, how you go in & out of things, finding more things and becoming more from it. Your story is an interesting one, as I remember going in & out of magic myself from time to time. But for some reason, you find it again, always bigger & better than ever. It's a beautiful thing. And gee, I remember having only a few posts to my name here like you, and look at me now all these years later, Im pushing nearly 8000 now...WOW! Im truly amazed by it, as this place is indeed quite magical in and of itself. Again, welcome and enjoy...

Figured I could weigh in on this, as I use similar replicas for practice. I bought 4 x Morgans, and 4 x Walking Liberties for $8.88
To be honest, I don't have the real versions of those coins to compare against, as they don't fit my style. For comparison, I find the Morgans are heavy enough that I have trouble using G's Pinch without a strained look to my hands. I know my fellow conjurers are big on aesthetics and sonics, so here's a short video of me flipping, playing with, and ringing them against each other, plus a failed benzais friction palm I thought would be a fun finish, then was too lazy to re-shoot. Hope it helps someone.

I am wondering if also your replicas have LIBBRTY written on the Morgan head (instead of LIBERTY).
Have a look at the thread here: http://themagiccafe.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=664225 The sound is pretty good! |

They look pretty nice, both coins. And the price is just right for practice or actual presentation, IMHO. And believe me, specs don't pay that much attention to what's written on the coin, certainly not to the extent to notice a letter out of place (or a date for that matter), just ain't happening unless you show it to them, and just why would anyone do that?
And hey, replica Walking Liberty halves?...where and WOOHOO!!! Anyway, those are some nice coins, Morgans and Walking liberty halves, and they don't have to get much better than that for me, and I would think most people would be happy-enough with them.

The quality (sound and detail) of your replicas is really very good!
I am wondering where you got them. I am also wondering what metal has been used to manufacture them: are they attracted by magnets? I know the "purists" are going to complain, but considering the price (in particular of silver morgans) I am generally in favour of replicas. Nothing prevents, after training with replicas, when you are familiar with a routine and want to own a real masterpiece, to then move to real silver. As Card-shark decided to produce Phoenix decks specially designed for magicians, other manufacturers could produce coin gaffs starting from high quality replicas (at least a sh***). |

I agree, and again have always pushed replicas as a viable alternative, that doesn't hurt your pocketbook. And if you happen to drop one, or lose one every now & again as we do, well, you don't feel all that bad and it's much easier to replace.
And yes, nothing stops you from also playing with silver coins or getting a really nice set at some point. But in the interim, replicas are wonderful ways to have the look and feel of the very things you'll be handling as to these sorts of coins. It's sorta like learning to drive, driving schools never teach you in Cadillacs or Benz', they teach you in older cars that are much cheaper and perhaps not as nice, definitely not top quality...But still you learn to drive just fine, and lo & behold, if you get the chance you will be able to drive a Cadillac just as well one day...or something like that. I actually have used replicas in actual presentations. In my "FlySki," the coins I use there are replicas and no one has ever asked me if they were real Morgans or not. That's because to specs they are what they look like mostly. And honestly, they become that to you as well. And this is all coming from somebody that has both, I have a few wonderful sets of silver Morgans and halves. I treasure them, but I have played & practiced with the replicas much more, and can do all the same things with either, with no deception lost when presenting them. Again, silver coins are nice, but you can get those too at some point. Hey, why not use both in your learning and growth with coins? And hey, I liked the Walking Liberty replicas too, but always went with the real Kennedy halves because they are cheap, just 50cents apiece at any bank. But these WL replicas are nice, where did you get them so cheap, scotch? *Incidentally, welcome back here, haven't seen you around for a good while now...Hope all is well. And Degio, there are craftsman that make gaffs from these replicas *(Joe Mogar comes to mind and he does a fine job of it too), and I think they actually made sh**ls first for them.

American coins are hard to get up here, so instead of emptying my wallet for the real deal just to drop them a hundred times a day, I figured these would be a great starting point. Lately, I've like the effect of borrowed coins so these don't get out much at the moment. They are copper coins, so they are not attracted to magnets. Quote:

I got them off AliExpress (a place for sourcing all sorts of products direct from Chinese manufacturers), for anyone else interested. If you search "replica morgan dollar" there should be tens of thousands of results to choose from. Hope that helps.
