I ordered "Practical Mental Magic," and I was just wondering was that purchase a waste of my money?

I concur. Even the things that aren't the most practical to perform will enrich the way you think and will offer insight on how a master such as Annemann structured his effects. Great book from one of the true giants.

It's a very practical book. Quite magical. But what do I know? I'm mental.

It is a waste of money if you don't read it. The old saying is "If you get one trick out a book, you have received the price of the book."

This is one of my favorite magic books and is certainly a classic. Don't let the cheap price fool you, the book is nothing short of brilliant.

This was the first book I got on mentalism and I really love it, it is a little dated in its style of writing but that is its only fault. Oh, and the boring slate routines although you can do some of them with business cards or paper.

Interesting approach - asking for reviews after buying the book.
Annemann's Practical Mental Magic and Corinda's 13 Steps to Mentalism together are to mentalism as Royal Road to Card Magic is to cards, and Bobo's Modern Coin Magic is to coins. Practical Mental Magic was first published in 1944. Therefore, the presentations will feel dated - but you shouldn't be using Annemann's (or anyone else's) presentations anyway. Some of the effects themselves will feel quaint - hat pins, for instance, aren't readily available anymore. But all the effects demonstrate solid principles that are worth studying. |
