I was just wondering if there are any other chess players on the forum besides myself?

I absolutely LOVE Chess. I usually have to play on the computer as my wife HATES games of all kinds, but especially Chess.

I play occasionally at a local coffeehouse/pub. People come to play every Tuesday night. I consider myself to be a beginner/intermediate player.

I'm a chess fanatic. I used to play frequently in tournaments. Now I only play occasionally because my family takes precedence.
When I am not in the Magic Café, I am often at fics.org playing chess online. That's not a web site, it's a free chess server.
Humans make life so interesting. Do you know that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to create boredom. Quite astonishing.

I love to play although I have not had a chance for quite a while.

I don't get much human competition, at least not like I did when I belonged to the Chess Club back when I lived in the big city.
Most of my games are against my Novag Saphire 9364. I have played literally over a thousand games against that little monster since I bought it a few years back. This thing WHIPS BUTT! And I mean to tell you, it is a many eyed monster. It has been rated at master level or higher in actual over the board play. It has been a staunch companion of mine for a good many years now. I have several other programs on CD rom, but the Novag has kept me busy enough that I have given them little time. For me, Chess is worse than eating potato chips. Once I get started, I literally can't stop. I guess you could say it is addictive! Problem is, when I'm focusing on chess, my magic suffers. There is only so much time in the day,and eight of those are spent working. That doesn't leave a whole lot of time for other things like magic, chess, or whatever. I love to give each game I play a NAME. It's something I am very good at, creating unique and catchy names. Some of them are absolutely crazy. Names like "King on The Rocks", "Smell a Mate", "Dent in The Armor", "Pawn Pie", "Is it true queens have more fun?", "Alekhine must have been looking on", "Blues in the night", "Rooks gone south", "Haunted knights", "Pawn Punch", ""Gobbled", "Go for the mate bait". "Rooks for the books", "All chessed up and nowhere to go", "bad bad Leroy Bishop", "Nasty knight knockout", "tactical mayhem", "The day the rooks came out on main street", "Steam roller', "King Sting", and on and on the list goes for literally hundreds of titles that I have thought of. In fact, I have filled up a note book with lists of them. I have a blast doing it. If you want to hear more, just PM me.

Chess is great. I used to compete in local tournaments many years ago and now occasionally, time permitting, play over the Internet. My one claim to fame is lasting some 30 moves against GM Julian Hodgson (below) during a simultaneous demonstration he was giving - I think I had him worried at one point, but then he unsportingly started taking all my pieces!

When I sit down to play, I get so mentally INTO the game, that it almost becomes like a zen thing, know what I mean? I mean, everything else gets shut out, and all I can see is the board and the pieces. For me, it is theraputic. (mostly when I win, losing is not so much that!) With my computer, it gets really crazy. I've gotten into end games that literally go on and on and on forever. The end game is the finest part of the sport, and great players know their endgames like the back of their hand. It is the one part that separates the boys from the men, and I guess that means I am still a boy. I have a few encyclopedias of endgame positions, and I mean tell you, you can literally spend a lifetime mastering that part of the game. It gets really deep. Profoundly deep, in fact. The thing about my computer that just kills me is how you can have everything sewed up so tight, and WHAM! It finds a tiny little chink in your armor and tears you apart in notime flat. The ***** thing has a thousand eyes, I swear. It sees EVERYTHING. The games I have beat it are proud moments for me, indeed. I use score sheets and record all my games, and am real meticulous about it. I figure someday, when I pass, I'll leave them to my sons to pass on to generations. At least two hundred years from now, my great great great great grandkids can replay my blunders, and say "Wow! Grandpa let him take his rook, and he could have promoted the pawn on the next move! What a dumb butt!" Posted: May 3, 2004 7:58pm Quote: On 2004-05-03 16:35, NeoMagic wrote: Chess is great. GM Julian Hodgson well, going thirty moves is nothing to be ashamed of! As for him taking all your pieces, well. BEEN THERE DONE THAT!!(on both sides of the coin!) The worst feeling in the world is being at someones mercy with only a couple pieces left against a whole army. You wish they would just finish you off instead of sustaining the torment. Computers are notorious for that.

I've done that on occasion, but the stubborn part of me sometimes insists on fighting to the bitter death.

A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kickboxing.
In loving memory of Hughie Thomasson 1952-2007.
You brought something beautiful to this world, you touched my heart, my soul and my life. You will be greatly missed. Until we meet again “my old friend”. |

I have played, on and off, since I was in Jr. High.
I recently started taking lessons from a student at the Univ. of Texas at Dallas, where the chess program consistently competes for tops in the nation. My teacher is a sophomore, and is rated 2250. I am learning a good deal of things I did not know before - I can now checkmate you with a King and 2 Bishops (vs. a lone King)! :^)
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

I'm not a chess player, but both of my sons are. My eight, soon to be nine, year old is quite good. At a scout sleepover, he was beating the older boys he was playing. I just wish he still belonged to the Chess Club at school. Each one of my kids has tried to teach me, but I think I'm a lost cause.

In High School I was captain and top player of my chess team, sad to say I haven't played a real game in years.
I do have a student that has a "master" rating though. She was just off at a tournement and finshed high enough to walk away with $2000
