This is a comedy routine. If you don't like that, you could take out the comedy. Pretty much any time I stand up in front of people, I am going to do some comedy.

I don't like egg bag routines where the magician goes overboard showing that the bag is empty, banging it, having spectator feel around in it, etc. Not my style.

Standard, cheapo red bag with gold trim. Written on it "Harry's Lunch."

"This is my lunch bag. See 'Harry's Lunch'"
Take out sandwich. "My peanut butter, liverwurst and kale sandwich."
Take out prunes. "My prunes. But I'm not supposed to call them prunes anymore because the word 'prunes' makes people think of going poop. I'm supposed to call them 'dried plums' - pffft!"
Take out small, over-ripe banana. "My banana."
Search in bag. "Finally, my hard . . . "
Search some more, turning inside out, etc. "Hard boiled . . . Did one of you take my hard boiled egg?"
Spectators: "Nuuuuuu!"
"Oh, well. I'm a magician. I can make another."
Produce egg from bag.
"Now I can have my lunch."

Thanks for sharing. I like the idea of making the props more organic.

"De gustibus non est disputandum!" (Concerning tastes, we cannot argue!)

I would NEVER mention body functions in MY show.

After taking the 'egg' out of the bag-mention that its 'hard boiled' then do the spred of YOUR fingers and gently tap the top of the Vol. head (feels like it WAS NOT hard boiled) - L-O-L

"Poop" is probably the only word I would use, and I would judge the audience.

For your own sake.... you don't want to be thought of in the same sentence as poop. especially with "going" in there. Come'on now!
how about using "#2" instead?
far less visual and with some thought can be funny as well.

you can even create gag by finding 2 prunes, such as....
"here's a prune"
"don't want to say prune cuz it makes some people think of... ya know.... #2."
"...and here's #2"
hahahahaha

As far as overdoing it with the emptiness stuff and the over proving, I agree.
There are some really boring egg bag routines out there, especially all the old ones.
checking the seams, checking the bag, feeling around, far too often.

I do several displays and things to prove the bag is empty during the course of my routine but they are short lived, as they should be, and not the focus.

Gomerel,

After reading George's post, I'll admit I laughed.
Then I re-read your original post on your routine looking for the comedy myself.

Aside from the "poop" line which would most likely get a laugh from kids under 6,
I really don't see any. Where do you get your comedy/laughs?

Is this just a quick 60 second routine with 1 probable comedy moment (that some like and some don't) or is there more
comedy that you're squeezing out of this routine?

Gomeral,
You started this thread criticizing most egg bag routines.
Then you leave, after not being able to handle a few questions about yours.

Well, Since gomerai "...won't be back to this forum.", it is probably, no, it IS most likely, futile, for me to comment, BUT. since I've performed, and, made a living with the egg bag since 1952, with a funny routine, that plays for children, as well as adults, I think that I'm qualified to state that I agree with The Ambitious Card's comment on 9-4-18.

Gomerai's "presentation" of the egg bag, as he wrote it, is, IMO, nothing but the "production" (?) of a few "comedy" props, and, the production of an egg, with a bit of "comedy business" with a boy and the egg. Frankly, I question that gomerai's "egg bag routine", could even be considered to be a routine.

IMO, his "routine" is nothing more than a short bit, to introduce a word, describing a body function, which, as "The Ambitious Card" has stated, "...would most likely get a laugh from kids under 6."

Great idea. I am the same way. I never felt comfortable presenting the Egg Bags routines I seen presented by other magicians for kids. Mine is buried in my props. I did see it the other day as I was going thru my old props organizing things.

From reading your post I am thinking about something like put the egg in the bag, next I have a hard time finding it. The kids help me find it, it is on my back, back of neck collar, etc. Make it vanish from my hand, next it mysteriously goes in the bag again.

At the start tell the children how the term "Hard Boiled Eggs" was made up. Because back in the past everyone would lose their eggs, and they were "hard" to find.

Thanks, Harry. Your idea opened several ideas in my mind of how to present the Egg Bag with a different comedy routine and style for kids while standing up.

In my routine "There's an Egg in Your Hat" described in Mini-Mysteries Book 4 on The Magic Nook, I deal with the egg search problem by having the kids who are wearing hats do all the searching and turning of their "egg bag" hats inside out, etc. I only have to do it once, and then find an egg in their own hats to get them started!
Image

Finding the Chicken Hat inside one of the hats makes the frenzy even more exciting. The final proof that the egg is real by breaking it into a glass, and then restoring the broken egg and reinserting it into the wildest kid's hat as a finale is a show stopper, so that's usually where I end it.

I wanted to produce a chicken also.
I bought one that a friend was also using for a different purpose.

When I got it, I laughed... it was gigantic and I've never been able to use it yet. it's 6 feet long.
It's hilarious and packs pretty small but not small enough to get into and out of an eggbag.

We need to be careful not to harass or embarrass those sharing their ideas.
But just as important that we give honest feedback.

There's a big difference between silly and funny, dumb humor and smart comedy.
And it takes work.

I think we too often adopt this line of thinking...

It doesn't have to be THAT funny. They're just kids.
I'm not performing for the parents. I'm a kids entertainer, after all.
If I can't get them to laugh, I'll get them to scream. If I keep them screaming, that's a show!
