That is because the market has been flooded by copies, and newer versions have also appeared on the market. It is so confusing now that it is impossible to tell the good from the bad.
Never heard of them being referred to as thumb lights. Is that something new you are referencing? Try Rocco's D'Lites, it is said, he started this craze. Check Seo Magic, TrickSupply.com, Penguinmagic, JL Magic in Korea, even the poorly made China magic by Magic Makers makes a version (buyer beware!) |

I bought a set at Fantasma in New York this year that are pretty amazing. They are rechargeable thru a USB. There are 3 pegs that come out of the tips. One controls the blue light, one the red, the third the green. You can combine them for other colors, and all three make white. Nice and bright. If you keep your hands moving, and given that you usually touch another finger to the thumb, the pegs aren't visible. I have had a lot of fun with them and having all those colors at your fingertips and completely controllable is great. They were around $60 for the pair.
I also got the PLT (Programmable Light Thumb). You can program these guys all sorts of ways, and they have infrared so you can throw the light from one to the other. I have one in a jar about 6 feet away and throw the light from my thumb (which goes off) to the jar which then lights up with whatever color I have thrown. Tons of possibilities. They are made by a French guy. BUT.... BIG BUT.... they do not seem to hold the charge from the USB very well. Three times I have programmed them, tested them and everything is fine. A few hours later at the gig, they are dead. So I think I am giving up on them, as cool as they are. Too bad. I have to say that a lot of these electronic things are great ideas but have problems with charging, thin fine cords, etc. Some simply stop working. All that said, as old as they are, as "seen on TV" as they may be, when I do one of my D'Light routines (usually to music). people LOVE it. We may be jaded and think of them as a toy or overexposed, but from Italy to a ship in the Antarctic to shows in the U.S., D'Lites have always delivered the wonder. I will continue to develop routines (sometimes using other props like a light up Rose I hand my wife), and continue to include them in my act. Laypeople aren't jaded to much of the illusions like we magicians are. Something to keep in mind.
Magic is where dreams become reality and reality becomes a dream.
