More and more I'm feeling inspired to write "my own" songs. I'm particular about lyrics and find it difficult to
sing songs that have lyrics I disagree with. I find, too, an overriding negativity in the lyrics of many songs. Here's an example I'm being kind of picky with- I do get the point of the lyric- but I still want to say, "Any girl can find satins and lace in a thrift store, sir. " And maybe Elvis would have said something of that sort, if he'd written this song: What do you think? Why do songwriters write? |

The same reason dancers dance, writers write and magicians... magish? Basically, most people need some way to express themselves in some way.

Definitely write, sing, play. I love the story of "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" where a 40,000 year old flute was found. There were no such things as superstars making millions back then, but there was still that need to express one's heart. Lynn

I can’t find the clip, but I remember Robert Vaughn inventing the flute in “I Was A Teenaged Caveman!”

People are not songwriters because they write songs. People write songs because they are songwriters. They are it. It can not be silenced. It is who and what they are.
I am in performance art because I have no choice. I could do nothing else. It is who I am. So write, play, sing and anything that expresses who and what you are at your core! Dress right spell differently, or any expression that is you.

I wonder how many popular singers actually write their own songs? To me it seems that writing and singing are two separate skill sets and most people don't have either, especially myself which is why I only sing in the shower and in my car with all windows rolled up

It is a strange thing. While Elvis recorded about 850 songs he wrote very close to zero. Many singers today do not write. MOST as a matter of fact.
The singer/songwriter is revered but is a very rare thing. Yes two skills. Elvis was no less an amazing artist. He just didn't happen to write songs.

Performing involves integrated skills. In my view, it's intricate, and I think many artists are able to express themselves artistically across the board, if they choose to. Given more time, I think Elvis may have chosen to write. He was an extremely skillful collaborator and director. Generally, he knew the material he performed inside out. Talented actor, as well, who knew the scripts he was given weren't up to snuff.

A critic once observed that Bob Dylan wrote GREAT songs... for other people to record. They DO seem to sound better from other people!

I've decided recently to take songwriting off the table, or more specifically, melody writing. Though most excellent melodies are simple, I find melodies very difficult to write, and have struggled to compose them.
I don't expect melody writing to be easy, but it doesn't seem, at least right now, to be in my wheelhouse, really. There's a constant concern with songwriting that the melody may actually be someone else's that you've inadvertently actually copied or are unaware of and that's a tough one to vet. I'm much better at dealing with words alone, so I think I'll continue to focus that way in terms of writing. I work at a variety of challenging, time consuming arts/crafts- including close-up magic- so I think letting go of songwriting will give me some peace. I'm in good company, as has been mentioned by Danny, so truly, I think I'm fine with it. There I go thinking out loud again, FWIW. |

I think we once did a thread on favorite singer/songwriters.
No doubt they are related but different fields, and excellence in one area by no means implies even competence in the other. And then add to that playing an instrument excellently, and you narrow down the field even further. We don't expect actors to be playwrights, or magicians to be inventors of effects, though some are. It's quite possible to achieve success by just doing one thing really well with character.

Hey Laurie, greetings.
As you mentioned, "..difficulties in song-writing.", *bing!* went off in my head. 😳 Pete Seeger wrote a fine book, 'The Incompleat Folksinger'. (i highly,..highly recommend the book!) He talks a great deal about 'this',.. and other 'challenges', as a potential Songwriter. He also adds,...and AGRUES(!), that we ALL have the potential! ,....and certain 'tricks' and technique.....help. 'The Incompleat Folksinger'......brilliant. p.s.: Mary Gauthier is also,..very helpful. |
