Hi, I'm working with an appearing birdcage production, I've worked with it for quite some time, I produce it with a latex dove inside posing it is real.
I would like to use a real bird like a budgie or something, and I was wondering what is the best type of bird to use? Your input would be great! Thanks

How big is the cage and know the model would help. It all depends if the bird has room and if you can keep the cage vertical.

Yeah how big is the cage? Is your cage a harakahn? His is the only kind I'd trust with a live dove, the ones from India are pretty crappy and I don't trust them enough to put my own dove in. There really is no reason why you can't use a real dove ever since Jason was on World's greatest magic everyone has been putting latex birds in their appearing bird cages. It takes away from the effect in my opinion, it looks better to have a live and flapping dove inside the cage. Jason told me why he has to use the latex ones a few years back, but unless you have a good reason to use the latex ones put the live ones in and it will really kick the effect up a notch!

Sperris,
If you don't mind telling, what is the reason someone would not be able to use a real dove in a Harakahn cage? Kyle |

Speaking of appearing bird cages, I bought one recently that I am definitly not happy with. Sperris or someone else, where could I find an appearing cage that I can put one of my birds into without hurting it? I don't know what kind I have because I got it used, but I definitly won't put my birds into it.

For live birds, you'll definitly want to go with the Harakahn version. They are hard to come by as they are hand made by a guy in Japan, but they are definitly the best available.

How can I tell if a cage is Harakahn? Is there an easy way to tell?

Harakan's are made in Japan and you can tell that it is a Harakahn by the gold label on the box, the white plastic perch, smaller ring on the top, and the two supports that run down the side to support the perch are usually a brass.
The reason some people don't use a real dove is because they hide the cage in some weird odd place where the dove could sufficate or they saw Jason do it and they thought that you can only put fake doves in them. I met Harakahn a few years ago and we laughed about how nobody puts live doves in there anymore. -but yeah anyway. Hope that helps you out. sperris

Thanks very much...just wanted to know what to look for if I ever saw a used cage and didn't know who the maker was. I was looking at a few, and discovered that they are in fact pretty expensive lol.

The problem I find with using a live dove in an appearing bird cage is there are times when the dove is not standing on its perch. It doesn't look good when the dove is at the bottom of the cage.

What type does Tony Clark use?
I'm just looking in the shop, and I have one here. Its 135 Canadian. I don't know what brand it is but it does say "Production Bird Cage (15" - SS). I'm just looking at it and there is NO way I would put a dove in this. To tell you the truth, I wouldn't put any birds in this, not even canaries or budgies like it recomends. It looks really ummm... unsafe? I don't know. I wouldn't even put a latex dove in here and that's saying something.....

A little tip on the Harakan cages. Put sandpaper on the perch so the bird can hold on better. Try to open the cage with a downward pop instead of a twirl. It is a little easier on the bird.

As a comedic touch I used to produce the appearing birdcage with an egg on the perch, I would give it a double look and when everyone realised it was an egg it got pretty good laughs.

I have a harakahn parakeet cage, but I don't trust it. The load is so tight, I'm afraid it will hurt the bird... plus it's just about impossible to load... That's my only experience with the cages.

I've been working with an appearing bird cage as well, although it is not at Harakahn. After a few practices however, the cage "breaks" and must be taken apart and rewired. Is this problem common with all appearing bird cages? How reliable/durable do you guys find your cages to be? Thanks

The problem is your cage is not Harakahn. Tony Clark, Jason Byrne, Joseph Gabriel and others have used theirs for hundreds of shows. You get what you pay for unfortunately.
