I got criticized for being oh so politically incorrect for paying homage to Aretha Franklin and not using her last name, so I'll have to do the same and just say that Ed, one of three guitar players of one of the best rock bands in history and co-author of one of the greatest rock songs of all time, has passed away at the age of 68.

Actually, the band had many more than 3 guitarists throughout their career, but they used 3 at any one time, and he was an early member and helped create the 3 guitar attack that they became famous for.

Even if I used his last name, that name does not bring the recognition of some of the other greats that have passed on in the last few years.

R.I.P., Ed.

PS- The title of this thread is a play on a song from a long time ago.

Sorry if it offends you.

Great guitarist, and great song.

RIP, Ed.

In this instance, I believe a surname name is needed, because a totally different person (albeit also a rock guitarist) is more frequently thought of when identified by just his first name, Eddie.

Hmmm, Arthur, I'm not sure who you mean.

Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam?

Eddie Money?

Eddie Hazel from P-Funk?

Eddie Ojeda from Twisted Sister?

Eddie Rabbit?

Oh, I think I know who you mean- Eddie Van Halen?

I figured that anyone who really wanted to know who I was talking about would have to do a little work to find out, if they didn't already hear the news.

And I know that he technically did not go by the name of "Eddie", but I was just playing around with the title of the old Curtis Mayfield song, Freddie's dead.

However, I seemed to get slammed when I identified Aretha Franklin just by her first name, although, to me there is only ONE Aretha, and I did not intend to offend her or anyone else, so I had to use just his first name to show that I am an equal opportunity offender.

But that's the world that we live in- every little thing seems to offend every little snowflake.

So anyway, Ed King of Lynyrd Skynyrd has passed on to the other side.

Rest in Peace, Ed.

Lynyrd Skynyrd … Great band! One of my favorite songs was That Smell. I didn’t know all the individual members’ names, but may Eddie rest in peace.

It doesn't offend me, it just doesn't tell me who died so I can't participate unfortunately.
Oh, and I'm pretty sure you're the only one who mentioned political correctness. Please cut and paste if I am mistaken. Thanks.

Well, Magicfish, you were the one who seemed to imply that I (and everyone else, of the few who posted in that thread, since no one else used her last name) was disrespecting Aretha Franklin by just calling her "Aretha" when I wasn't disrespecting her at all.

I'm actually surprised that at least 50 people did not post there.

She was very a important soul singer, after all.

But Aretha said it all, in my opinion.

No last name was needed to know who I was talking about, especially since it was pretty much the number one story the day she died.

Eddie's dead, of course, tells you nothing about who died, although it is a somewhat important death on the news.

That's all.

No more for me to say here.

Seriously? You say Eddie and were supposed to know who you're talking about?
Why turn a memorial thread into a riddle?
Just tell us who the heck you are talking about so we can be informed and possibly contribute.
Anyway, it's your thread.

Yes, when it comes to first names, in terms of rock guitarists, for me there can be only one Eddie … and that’s Eddie van Halen.

(Probably more so because I know him, and not the other gents you mentioned … except for Eddie Money, whom I met and shared the stage with … but he’s not really known as a rock guitarist).

Read a biography of them for a story in perseverance. It is incredible how many labels turned them down.

Interestingly enough had the Bass player not left, being worried about becoming famous, King may never have been in the band, and maybe not had the sound. Once Wilkeson returned King played guitar.

When The Who did their Quadophenia tour in the 2000's I had hoped Skynrd would open like in the 70's. Obviously this was before they broke out. THAT would have really been a night.

I got to see them one time only live and was not disappointed.

My girlfriend at the time loved Skynyrd and we had tickets to see them at Madison Square Garden in 1977 when the plane crash ended that portion of their career.
