Some magicians just focus on Laughs Per Minute, not Yells Per Minute. I use both in my show. What is your average Yells Per Minute in your show?
The main tricks I use for Yells Per Minute are the following: Afraidy Cat Frog Potty Time Break Away Wand Multiplying Wands Deluxe Flight of Flowers My average is 1 yell per 12 minutes. I cut the yells in each show short when I see a toddler in a daycare center cover up his/her ears from the loud yelling. |

Anyone can do look-don't-see or hitting yourself with a sponge wand for for 30 minutes with 30 "screaming" incidents. That's not a show. That's not an act. That's a hack that hasn't thought of anything better.......yet. Please don't fool yourselves with this statistic.
If after your show is really good, you want to try to improve it and rate the improvement by some increase in "positive utterances" per minute, then that makes SOME sense. But don't tell me that because you can get 30 4-year-old kids to scream every 30 seconds at "something" that you're one helluva entertainer with a world-class magic act. Anyone can get a lot of noise per minute from kids and that alone is a very very naive way to rate your show. Let's do better than that.

Great points Frank. I think Dynamite got his figures a bit wrong. He said he was getting a "yell" every 12 minutes. Hardly world shattering, though he may have been trying to say a "yell" every 12 seconds.
After reading both of John Breeds fantastic books I've really gone for the organic laughs and it's really helped my show a lot to make the show more fun to perform. I've had a lot more parents make the remark about the kids laughing their heads off, which pleases me no end.

OH, if you want a really great book to help with laughs and yells per minute check out John's new book at his website. www.johnbreeds.com
I don't get any money for this, as John has been a great friend for almost 20 years now and I do use a few of his ideas and many of his gags along with a couple of his routines which elevated my act in a very positive way, and got me many repeat gigs over the years. Al Kazam

I am not talking about having the kids yell over anything. I just want to let you know I am talking about something that requires the children to yell in an act that is entertaining. Yea, I could have explained it more at the start, but I was thinking everyone was going to understand me clearly. I use different tricks and presentations that requires the kids to do something like yell, laugh, etc. It is all a part of RPM, Reactions Per Minute. |

Tommy is great. It's one thing for the kids to yell and react on their own which is what we see in the video, though sadly there are many who just incite the screaming and shouting for no other reason than inciting the kids to scream and shout, which I think is what Frank was referring to. The first is what we all should aim for and the second well, I can't think of a good reason for it to be honest.
Everybody is different I suppose.

Dynamike,
I wasn't speaking to you directly. I was hoping to reach the ones I've seen on this forum before that basically do look-don't see for their entire act, because they've got nothing else besides that and the canned patter they bought with their tricks. I already know your act is not like that. Sorry if you thought I was directing all that at you. I was not. It just seemed like a good time to bring that up.

I am sorry for the misunderstanding, Frank. I should have thought twice because there are two ways to look at. It is a good thing you brought up the incorrect way of yelling since I did not bring it up. Now the amateur magicians and Al Kazam can learn something by looking at it the wrong way and the right way.
