I am going to make a 18 ft white streamer and a 18 ft black steamer appear from a Zebra Tube/Massal Tube. Next I want to make both silks change into one black and white zebra or polka dot streamer. What method would you recommend changing both long streamers into one? Can anyone suggest a routine with the black streamer and the white streamer before changing them into one?
At the end I will put the zebra streamer or the black and white polka dot streamer into an animal size drawer box. Once re-opened, the steamers will be replaced by two chinchillas, one black and one white. I will experiment other effects using the following throughout my act: Polka Dot Hanky, Black on White (21 inches x 21 inches) Thumb Tip Streamer (Zebra - Black & White) Production Hanky Zebra Black and White (21" x 21") |

Tie the two streamers tightly together and have the knot dissolve. Then have one streamer penetrate the other. It's going to be awkward working with 18 foot streamers, but with practice and perhaps help from someone in the audience, I think it can be done.
I would use the same Curly-Q Tube (WizJ #32) to merge them together, pushing the white streamer in one end and the black streamer in the other, and then have two helpers pull out the two ends to show the mixed streamer while you open the Tube in the center to show it empty. I say Curly-Q rather than Massal because the load chamber is changeable.

Wow. Jim, your comments are always outstanding. I feel like I am dreaming. I want to thank you forever, but forever isn't long enough. I have several of your great Wizards' Journals E-books. I will have to check and see if I have #32 yet.

I thought you could use the Zebra Tube to do everything you describe. You may have to make very simple modifications, but nothing that would spoil the tube.

Another prop that can help you achieve a switch of some silks / streamers is the Magic Switch Tube from Tommy James.

The old fashioned dye tube would also work fine.

Wow. Did I hit the lottery of support number or something? I am receiving strong information.
Bill, I always knew you were always going to chime in. You gave me the most support in open and private. You always come up with genius ideas. From what you mentioned I am on to work on putting small containers to use as pockets and assemble them in the big pocket. That way nothing will get mixed up or tangled. I will be able to pull out the right silk when needed. I am surprised no one invented that yet. You should patent it. Donald, that is one of Tommy James' products I never knew about. Perfect timing. I appreciate the link too. I will watch his video. If he ask me how did I hear about it, I will definitely tell him it was from you. Thanks to each and everyone of you. |

That is one of the things I already ordered from my wish list. I ordered the Morrisey Dye Tube from SilkMagicTricks.com a few days ago. Today I received an email they are out of stock of the Morrisey Dye Tube. I cannot find that dye tube for sell any where else. They offered to refund me or substitute the item. I see the following on their website: Vernet Dye Tube: "You start showing both hands EMPTY. Then you take a RED silk push it into the top of your fist and it emerges from the bottom change to a WHITE silk. Both hands are then shown to be EMPTY. The WHITE silk can be immediately changed back to the ORIGINAL color. This professional gimmick has been specially designed by Vernet made in PLASTIC. It's very easy to handle. NO Silks are supplied. Measures approximately 2 inches long." Rices' Dye Tube: "Rice Utility Dye Tubes are the finest on the market! They are of precision construction throughout; made entirely of brass. The sliding cup is guaranteed not to bind or pinch the silks and is silent in operation. Al Baker routine included." Richard, you know more than me when it comes to silk. What do you think? |

Dynamike, for the length streamers you are talking about would require loading a full single streamer in the Dye Tube and push two other streamers in during the change. A Rice style with the plunder would be better than the Morrisey Type tube. If memory serves me the Morrisey tube was a tape type tube which limits the amount of material you can put in it.
The Rice tubes will hold an amount almost the entire size of the tube. Also the size tube is important in terms of diameter which will also determine the amount of material it will hold. I have 6 Rice dye tubes, three for the act and 3 for backups. Although they seem to last a life time so maybe backups weren't needed? You can also roll the dye tube into a paper tube and blow the changed streamer out at the end, make for a flashy display when it comes out. Provided you have enough wind for an 18' streamer!

Yes, the size will depend on the size of streamer you use. I would try the medium size which you can still get I believe from Ruth Rice Crone. That will give you a starting point. I would also suggest that you read up in the Rice Encyclpedias on dye tube or get a copy of "Thru the Dye tube" by Rice. It is a wealth of information.

I suggest you check out the tissue paper gimmick in the e-Book, page 15. It's inexpensive and disposable. Enough said.

Just to let everyone know this is where I was last weekend thanks to "Bill Hegbli's Massal Tube" invention: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzVd3b_A8i0&feature=youtu.be
I am using dividers. I see pros and cons. Pros: The color of the tube matches the silks. Each change uses only one item. Cons: The tube is big. I should cut it using only a third. Putting the streamer back in takes a lot away because the streamer looses its valve in length. I should put the streamer in the Drawer Box for the ending instead of back in the tube. Jim, I already ordered your Curly-Q Tube. Excellent idea. I will experiment with it to see how well I can handle it. I did look on page 15. A disposable is awesome. Donald, I am thinking about how I can add Tommy James' Switch Tubes to my act. I appreciate your support. Professor Fawkes and Richard, I can't wait until I include your ideas. It will take a lot of practice. I have been reviewing Duane Lafin videos. I also ordered the Simplex, Palmo, Hank Ball, medium and small Utility Dye Tube, Sanada Gimmick, Fujiwara, Jay Scott Berry Live video, plus much more. I would love it when I can get a routine together with the silk showing no other gimmick as Duane Lafin has on his Hank Ball video. I already have the CD of Rice Encyclopedia of Silk Magic. I ordered "Thru the Dye tube" book anyway. I like his reel tricks in the second volume. I am thinking which one to use. The other day I said to myself "Why not make a linking silk routine like the Linking ropes?" But I already saw it as I was viewing one of the volumes in Rices Encyclopedia of silk magic last night. Just to let everyone know I ordered other silks. Some are the same pattern but different sizes. I will play with 18 inches, 24 inches and 36 inches. I am going to have a lot of experimenting to do. Of course we all know nothing in this world is free. Each one of you can send me your bills by PM. Each and everyone of you mean a lot to me. Thank you very much for your support. |

HI Dynamike
its been years since I have been on the Café and years since you and I have chatted. so I watched your routine and read your desires. I am going to come at this from a completely different angle here. what if you did away with the props? referring to the giant tube. I like the drawer box with the little critters LOL but the tube just screams magic prop. i wont pick apart the routine as I can see you already seeing some flaws and working on them- sign of a professional. what I will suggest are two ideas. 1-what if you simply wound up the two silks the black and the white one and then "throw" them and instantly they turn into the white streamer with spots. now you are saving time, removed a "magic" prop and created a cool visual. 2-you could put the two silks into a tear apart change bag and rip it apart and the silk streamer goes flying up in the air. add confetti and you got some cool visual magic one other thought is you can do the number one idea and then use the tear apart back to switch back to the two silks by putting the streamer in the bag and produce the two silks personally I don't think you need the striped silk at all. just go from the black and white to the white streamer with black spots. you will then tighten up the routine add visual magic and have less props to carry. if you need any help with this let me know (by the way I make and sell tear apart bags) but that is not why I suggested it. its a great prop that I have used for 16 years! take care bud magically yours sam
