Recognizing there is a need for an affordable card press, I am considering marketing a low-cost, effective press. It will likely be available for purchase the week of May 2nd.
I am most interested in the comments, suggestions, critiques, etc. of Magic Café members regarding the card press. Complete information and photo are available for viewing at: http://www.cablespeed.com/~mrreed/cardpress/. Based on the feedback I receive from Café members, a final decision to market it will be finalized within the next few days. I would sincerely appreciate your feedback, either by post, or PM, or e-mail at: mrreed@cablespeed.com. Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike.
This looks very nice. Almost like a something I would have liked to have on my desk. The price seems right too. The only thing you might want to change is that is seems like a bit of work to unscrew and than screw the bolts back on. Maybe a slit in the glass plate and a hinge on the bolts, then you wouldn`t have to unscrew the bolts completely, if you know what I mean ? |

Verrrrry Nice! Now you can see what decks you have in the press at any given time.
I'd buy it. Well done! Cheers!

I like it a lot, and would purchase one. The clear plates are a great improvement to the existing versions.

Well it depends on how much your going to sell it for. I made mine for about 2 bucks and it works better then the one that cost 40.00 bucks. Mine is sort of like McBrides, 2 pieces of metal and 4 screws. Very cheap at home depot.
I do like the clear see through, nice price. I would most likely pick one up for that price if I didn't have one. Prop looks great.

This item looks very nice. Does it come with a bag to protect the plexi?
I would perfer to be able to stack 3 decks of manipulation deck. Is quarter inch plexi strong enough to clamp the decks without binding? I bind my Nielsen clamp with my manipulation cards and it is metal. Is there rubber feet on the bottom? Can you engrave or etch magic in the plexi or a rabbit in hat? |

To wmhegbli,
I wouldnt think the plexi would bind your stuff as much as the old style ones. As for you ? on the engraving, yes you can engrave any type of plexi or plastic. Get and engraver and put a picture behind it and start away. If your not sure about it you may want to have it done. Nice prop to be messing up by a not so nice pic if you know what I mean. Im sure you could find a place at like a Mall or somthing that could engrave it cheap.

It looks really interesting! I agree with el toro, though, about ease of opening. You should probably put in some slits to easily take out the cards.
Otherwise, I commend you for such a fine product! By the way, wmhegbli, I like your idea of engraving a magical motif on the plexiglass!

In reply to the questions asked about the Card Press:
"...able to stack 3 decks..." -- Yes. Two presses can be combined with longer bolts to create a press that will hold 3 or 6 decks. "Is quarter inch plexi strong enough to clamp the decks without binding?" -- Yes. I've experienced no binding with the press. It would take quite a thick piece of metal to reach the same level of rigidity -- a 1/6" thick maybe? Or thicker? And the acrylic won't become permanently distorted if over tightened. "Is there rubber feet on the bottom?" No. One of our main objectives was to keep the cost as low as possible. If feet for the press are desired, stick-on rubber or cork feet can be obtained at hardware and department stores. "Can you engrave or etch magic in the plexi or a rabbit in hat?" Acrylic is easily etched. We don't have etching equipment and, again, our intent was to keep the cost as low as possible. "Does it come with a bag to protect the plexi?" No. Again, our intent was to keep the cost as low as possible. If we were to start adding bells and whistles like a bag, rubber feet, etching, stainless hardware, etc. the price would have to be substantially higher... and with no increase in the actual functionality of the unit. "...a slit in the ... plate and a hinge on the bolts..." These design elements were considered, but to incorporate them would have increased the price of the unit substantially! Slits to permit the bolts to swing away would have weakened the plates enough that thicker acrylic would have to be used, which would have made the unit much heavier in addition to raising the cost. I felt the press would be uncompetitive if the price was in the $30-$40 range. I didn't find the extra minute to clamp or unclamp the deck(s) an inconvenience. Thank you for all your comments, suggestions, and kudos. I would like this to be the best card press available at an affordable price. Keep the suggestions, comments, critiques, etc. coming, fellas! Mike

This looks nice and functional. I have made presses from plywood before. It is much more difficult to see what you have in a plywood press. It requires x-ray vision, and my normal vision isn't that good!
I think you have a winner on your hands!

When making mine, I did a couple tries before getting it that way I liked it. One thing that you don't have is a border around where the deck goes. This keeps the deck very square so that it doesn't spread and clamp half the cards bent.
Maybe yours gets around that problem because it's clear. I don't have it so I can't say. It's just something to keep in mind. Great idea though! |

I posted the original message in this thread on May 2nd.
I have been somewhat overwhelmed, and impressed, by the responses I received from Café members; forum replies, e-mail, PM's. I wish to thank each of you for your comments, suggestions, and especially your compliments (One response actually prompted a design change in one model). Any additional comments or suggestions offered would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks, Mike
