I have a question. A few years ago I backed up all my vhs with dvd. I’m thinking about going to a convention and selling the vhs with the backup copy dvd. I think I should also give the back up dvd with the vhs, however I don’t want to make anyone angry or do anything wrong. I would be selling the original vhs with the back up copy of the dvd, is this right or would I be looked at as wrong? I don’t want to do anything wrong but I have about 100 vhs I would like to sell and I don’t think it would be right for me to keep my back up copy

Short answer: sell the VHS (originals) and destroy the DVD (copies).
Long answer: you are allowed to make back up copies for personal use, but tossing in the back up copy is piracy. If the new owners wish to make their own DVD copy; then that is their choice but you should not provide the copy. Also, be aware that VHS is old technology. It is tape that has been magnetized to record the data and in such decays over time (along with the actual tape). Not all VHS tapes are created equal. Back in the early 80's when VHS was first entering the scene the quality of the tapes (and recording) was much better. Back then the tapes would cost $40 - $75 apiece. VHS rental stores (most of them) used the better quality tapes so that they could handle the constant use. Later, when they dropped down in price (such as found in retail/Wal*Mart stores) because they were made of lower quality. With that said, most magic producers used the cheaper tapes in their productions and may not hold up over time. I have tapes I bought 20 years ago which I no longer use ( I don't even have a VCR anymore). This does not mean they are worthless. There is a growing group that collect VHS tapes (with box) as a collectable item and the play value does not matter. I do the same with laserdiscs. I have no way of playing them but still I collect them. I know it is a long post but that is why I offered the short answer first.
I still recall the day I met Beaker from the Muppets. He said to me "Meep, meep, mee mee mee Meep!", and that has made all the difference.

Interesting question. I saw an eBay seller openly say that what he was selling was copies and reported him but eBay did nothing. He even went so far as to use the original VHS covers in his ad s picture. I'm also not aware of being able to make copies for even personal use, although it seems reasonable. The copy rights I've seen say nothing like that. Mr. Gainor, can you point us to the law on it?
No matter how many times you say the wrong thing, it will NEVER be right.

Hello Magic_son,
You are perfectly in the right to sell your VHS tapes while providing a back up copy. Your intent isn't to make multiple copies and sell them over the legal limit. "...it defines a misdemeanor violation as occurring when the value of the copied material exceeds $1,000 over a 180-day period; a felony occurs if the value exceeds $2,500. Penalties range from a one-year jail sentence and up to $100,000 in fines for first-time offenders, to five years' imprisonment, and up to $250,000 in fines for repeat offenders." In addition- "Copies for preservation and security purposes are also permitted when the existing format in which the material is stored becomes outdated, or if the work is lost, stolen, damaged, or deteriorating." https://legal-dictionary.thefreedictiona......+copying

Interesting EZ, and thank you for your cited answer. It appears that not only can you make a copy for a back up (material stored becomes outdated), it appears if you sell the VHS, you would be able to GIVE the back up copy to the buyer. I only have a few hundred that I'm wanting to sell
