If anything...
do you only perform for friends? do you just like to have a little something on you when you're out? Something else? What have you learnt by doing what you do, and are you happy with that (and don't want to change) - or, is it just a step towards something else? what does performing socially give you that makes you continue to "do it"?

An audience saying "How did you do that" I can leave.
Having friends ask you all evening "How did you do that?" is a pain in the backside.

I can honestly say I have never performed socially in all my years in this business, never for family or friends.

If you never perform socially, why are you posting in this thread?
For me, it taught me that I have more fun creating an experience where the participant is the star than where I am. In other words, to take the focus off myself in favor of my participant. For example, I used to do a LD test where the participant finds the one card with the dead name on it, but I know the name. This was good, but it left the focus on me. I dropped the divination. They find the right card with a pendulum (right out of Docc Hilford's Monster Mentalism) and it ends there. This isn't as "strong," but it puts all the light on the participant and his/her ability to find the right card with a pendulum. I don't really perform for friends and family, but I do things with classmates and professors now and again. And I do think it is possible to get that connection with someone in a social situation, not just in a show. Being able to tell a person a bit about himself, to show him a wonderful thing, to see the eyes get a little bigger and that smile that acknowledges that something mysterious and rather cool just happened, yeah, that's very uplifting. -Patrick |

Since I no longer perform professionally except when my buddy calls me at new years socially is the only way to go.

Developing a reputation.
Of course, this is only true if you decide to play the part of a wizard all the time.

I do use social performance as a way to build my character as well.
I do not perform socially very often. I'm not one to carry props around every day 'just in case' a performance situation arises. So if I do perform it's generally special occasions with friends or family. Because many people in this area have trouble understanding what it is that I do, it's often easiest to demonstrate with a quick performance that gives them an idea of what being in my audience will be like - and why they should buy a ticket to my show.

Excellent...
When I performed more, performing socially was a great way to harvest contacts and bookings... Bob cassidy's black box cinema, there's a short clip from a PEA meeting on it, he talked about how performing one on one and socially was how he got a lot of gigs...

Perhaps because of my tarot-reading background, and my interest in one-to-one performance, I've never felt comfortable performing socially. But I never really dug deep into the why of the matter, until recently.
And whether or not I have retroactively decided this, it has more to do with the fact that I want to be seen as a figure out of a Surrealist painting, leaving the room, turning a corner - someone that has left behind the trace of mystery and magic - and absolutely no desire to be seen as the guy who does magic when the group gets together. There are only a handful of pieces I perform, and I want those to be perfect and poignant - I need to be just as serious about them as I hope they will be for those individuals I perform them for. So what has performing socially taught me? Less is more. And not to look for a moment to perform, not to be eager. Let the moment arise organically.

Above all else performing socially gives me abosolute pleasure. It affords me freedom of time constraints that are normally imposed when working paid shows and allows me a ‘greater’ chance to connect with my spectators on a personal level. As a creator it offers me a playground to test new ideas in their utmost infancy and helps me to refine them further as they evolve. The other benefit is that I get 100% control over who I will and will not perform for.
As I said in my book, you are far more likley to see me perform in a social environment than at a black tie event. That said, I certainly don’t turn away decent paid shows too Best Wishes Michael
As a mentalist you must always ask yourself what if! And throughout your life you should seek to ask and answer this question over and over again, only then will your wildest dreams become a reality!

When I "perform" socially I become a performance monkey. And I am no longer socializing I am playing a role.from experience over the years I know how to hold a group spellbound for hours with a casual conversation. Without any effects just talking about hypnosis and the mind. People love it so I have a tool that will grab attention which I can use to leverage if I want. But I find it Sooo tiring robotic and unfulfilling. Maybe I've been doing it for far too long. What performing socially has taught me is that socializing is for socializing. I don't do it anymore. Its unpaid work.I find it much more interesting interacting and finding ways to hold the attenton of others without mentalism/hypnosis.

What performing socially does is beyond words to me. It also has allowed me to understand how humans are really good at tunnel vision. How they can take their entire focus and being into wherever you guide them. What it does best is show me the very best side of humans. Nothing cracks a human being like a good performance. I carry some props with me at all times. I don't know if that's weird but it has allowed me to take almost any adult and transform them into a child

That social performance and commercial performance are quite different. No judgement cast in either direction, FWIW. There are certain things I’ve learned as a “social performer” that probably would never have occurred to me (had it not been for the case of me being one) and I’m really happy that I know those things. I’m sure the reciprocal of this is equally true.
