The plus four stack has its roots in the Galasso card system from 1593. It predates the Si Stebbins so it's technically not a variant.

On the "tools" page of my site you can find a free Excel spreadsheet for exploring these kinds of stacks.
Elsewhere on the site you can find some history of the stack, and even download Si Stebbins' original book.

Richard Osterlind used the +4 stack before he developed the BCS system.

A wee bit off topic, but is there a "stack finder" web app somewhere? Often people here are in need to recognize a certain pattern of cards and wonder what stack (if any) it might be.
So I wondered if there is web based compilation of any sort maybe?

@nicolino:
I don't know if that's what you're looking for but there's an app called memdeckpro.It contains several stacks and is imho the perfect app for practicing a stack. |

Thanks, macc but I was rather aiming at some sort of database with a built-in reverse search function, i.e. you enter a sequence of cards and the database looks up the according stack. I understand, though, that there would be several copyright issues with such a tool as most stacks are intellectual property.
