Gerry seemed like he wanted to share the backgrounds and some of the "whys" behind the things he was saying and each time Dan stopped him. It is important to hear the journey and reasoning behind what he was sharing to see how it evolved and came to was it is in its current state. Also several times Gerry openly said "well I'm in Vegas so I can do (or get away with something specific)... implying that he would do it differently when not in Vegas , in his own theater, with his own production, etc. The reality is most watching will NOT be performing and headlining their own show in Vegas and would've welcome how Gerry would do things differently in different performance environments and markets. A couple of times Gerry tried to offer variances of how he does things differently in his corporate or television appearances, but Dan would stop him and bring it back to the 23-minute performance we just saw. He may have been trying to be helpful or felt he was "reeling Gerry back in" but Gerry is a very concise speaker and performer without a lot of fluff, so he didn't and likely wouldn't have wandered too far off topic. If he did it would have probably been helpful and beneficial to viewers and probably more applicable or closer to their own performance situations. Gerry is a well documented headlining performer of 40+ years, he doesn't need to be lead or guided. Other than that, of course, there was also Dan just trying to be Dan. He could work on being a better host, listening more and seeing things not from his own perspective but from that of the paying viewers. Now I know some will say he was doing it to help promote Gerry's book as that was his typical reasoning behind it each time he did it. However, Gerry doesn't need him to hype the book and in many of the areas where he did this, it is not covered in the book! When someone specializes in Q&A and has done over 5000 performances of it - let him speak! Don't interrupt, derail or prevent thought tangents - listen and learn -or at least let others do so. Also, it would have been great to actually see the physical handlings inside of the box from perhaps an overhead view. Instead, they cut to show the boxes on the table, but they could have done so much more by letting us see the actual handlings and movements as he was describing them. It would have been very simple to add and been well worth it to the viewer. I don't think one person would've complained. |

For those that own Gerry's book, "Performing the Q&A.. how does the information compare? Is it all the exact same stuff? Is the price worth knowing the stuff that's not in the book (if there is anything in addition to the book) ?
It occured to me at once that love could be a great illusion, that makes fools of brilliant thinkers everyday

This was a fantastic lecture by a true master of the Q&A. I enjoyed every minute and lerned a great deal.
Dan Harlan did a great job. The book covers more and is more of a text book on Gerry"s approach. The lecture provides a performance with enough how to details to get you started. If you are a serious student of the Q&A, I would recommend getting both. Agree it would have been nice to see inside the box with a top down camera view, but not necessary as Gerry explained the workings clearly enough. If you've always wanted to learn how to do a professional blindfold Q&A, this video and the book are what you want. |

And where in the interview does he explain how to r**d the goods? That part of the act, presumably the reason why anyone would want this, is conveniently glossed over.

Just watched this video again, and it is so good. If you want to learn how to perform a great Q&A, this video and Gerry's book Performing the Q & A, are two really outstanding resources.
Gerry shares so many great inside details and how to tips. He has performed his Q&A over 5,000 times. Amazing. |
