So you want to learn card magic? Some of the best advice you'll receive is to start by learning the fundamentals of card magic and card handling. But where do you start?
Sure, you can head to youtube, and you will find some tutorials by skilled magicians. But these are typically few and far between, and by far the majority of magic instruction you'll find on youtube is done by teenagers with a very mediocre ability in card handling. So don't rely on learning from youtube. Instead, I strongly recommend that you consider investing in a good video by a good magician and teacher. Now you could consider a single DVD like Oz Pearlman's Born to Perform Card Magic, or one of the Ellusionist DVDs. They're decent, but also quite limited. Hence my recommendation of Roberto Giobbi's video course, which is fairly inexpensive considering the amazing content. Giobbi is an excellent teacher, with real insight into how magic works, and few are better at this than he is. I'm currently working my way through this, and wish I had started my adventures into card magic with this many years ago! Roberto Giobbi's Card College 1 & 2 Personal Instruction The Complete Course https://www.robertogiobbi.com/site/produ......e-course This video course was originally sold as a set of 4 DVDs of nearly 8 hours, but is now available as a digital download via his website. You can buy the 23 individual chapters/lessons for €4.95 each, or you can get excellent savings by purchasing all 23 lessons as a package for €49.95 - very good value given the amount and quality of the content. The first lesson (Fundamental Techniques) is available in entirety for free as a sampler, and you'll already learn a lot of valuable tips about some basic techniques with cards from that, and it gives a good idea of what to expect from Giobbi's teaching: Lesson 1: Fundamental Techniques https://www.robertogiobbi.com/site/produ......amentals Subsequent lessons all teach techniques, as well as one or two tricks that use the card sleights that are taught. So besides the fundamentals of card magic, you also get to learn some solid material to perform with. I'm enjoying this video course immensely, and am super impressed with the quality - highly recommended! |

Endersgame,
Wonderful review. Giobbi is the best as is his "Card College" I bought it early in my magic education. (The book) It’s the Bible for learning card magic Thanks for the great review.

A good video is an excellent tool to learn card magicm and can be used either on its own or along with a good book. Of the ones produced in the last number of years, Robert Giobbi's Card College video course is arguably the best, and my aim was to make more people aware of it.

More than 20 years ago, when I was seriously involved in magic, a friend of mine who worked in a magic shop recommended a new book to me. Roberto Giobbis Card College. After buying countless individual tricks and gimmick decks, this book was a new beginning for me in card magic. A masterpiece.

Start with some self working stuff, and concentrate on the presentation.
That is important for first success. Parallel you can practice more advanced stuff. |

Card college is really awesome. For the first success I agree with "gismo". Self working tricks are unbelievably good to get your first experience. And they don't have to be worse than tricks with 20 different moves.
I also have nothing against gimmick decks. Also in this section there are incredible effects. It was a process for me, too. For me it's important that I can show something impromptu with any deck. I can also recommend the Roberto Giobbi series "Card College light". There are 3 of them and they all contain card tricks without slight of hand. |

I'm curious to hear from any others who have downloaded the free first lesson, and if so what you thought of it.

EndersGame,
I own the whole project, not just the first free lesson. It is definitely good, if is this what are asking for. I'm glad I have them, but I usually refer much more to the books rather than the DVD, especially because it's much quicker to take a book from a shelf than turn on a PC, put the disk in it .... I did watch them more than once, though and they've been helpful. You also see the performance and explanation of many tricks from the CC1 and CC2, but there are also tricks not in the books. And mind you the DVD do not follow exactly the English edition of the books, but are a very good compendium to them. Mark |

It's also worth mentioning that in November, Giobbi will be releasing a follow up video course entitled "Card Magic Masterclass", which will be another 8 hours of footage (5 DVDs and/or digital downloads), covering all the techniques from Card College 3, 4 & 5.

One nice thing about this video course that I should have mentioned earlier is that you can also buy individual lessons. Especially if you are stuck with learning a particular sleight, or want some professional tips in improving it, watching a video can be helpful. All of the lessons from Giobbi's course are available separately for €4.95, and given that they cover different topics, these separate lessons might be a good option for someone looking to get some professional tips in mastering more technically demanding sleights like the Top Change, Classic Force, or Palm, all which need to be performed smoothly and cleanly.
https://www.robertogiobbi.com/site/produ......ownload/ The above link will take you to a page where these are available separately, but here's an overview of all the individual topics covered in the 23 lessons: 1. Fundamental Techniques; 2. Overhand Shuffle; 3. False Cuts; 4. Card Controls; 5. The Force 1; 6. Riffle Shuffle; 7. The Transfer Cut; 8. The Glide; 9. The Glimpse; 10. The Key Card; 11. The Double Lift; 12. Flourishes; 13. Auxiliary Sleights; 14. The Hindu Shuffle; 15. Overhand Shuffle 2; 16. The Force 2; 17. The Palm; 18. The Spread Cull; 19. False Counts & Displays; 20. The Top Change; 21. The Crimp; 22. The Reverse; 23. False Cuts 2. |

I have the 4-DVD set and find it very educational. Giobbi really does take an academic approach to card magic, and this makes his DVDs quite thorough. I also have begun the Card College series (I'm starting vol. 3) which even further drives home Giobbi's professorial approach to card manipulation. As a former academic I really appreciate how meticulous and in depth his treatment of the subject matter is.
There are two caveats to what I've stated. First, on his DVDs he talks too fast for me...I have to slow the playback speed. Second, with respect to the books, they are so in depth that I sense that I am learning a significant number of moves that I will not likely use later. For example, has anyone heard of or used the "K.M. Move"? This, in turn, tends to make me feel as if my progress is being slowed. But then I slap myself and yell "be patient." After all, who am I to suggest that I know what's important better than Professor Giobbi?
So many sleights...so little time.

TeddyBoy,
I have the Card College books and the 4-DVD set. For me, they complement each other beautifully. In cases where the videos are too brisk, you can always read about the move in the book and then watch the video again. About the K. M. move: your comment made me realize that one of the few flaws in Card College is that Giobbi doesn't always make clear which sleights are fundamental and should be learned by all magicians, as opposed to the ones that may be nice in certain situations but aren't essential. Although I haven't learned the K. M. move, I'm aware of some good tricks that use it. I agree with EndersGame that the books are great for beginners. I started out with them, and I love how Giobbi starts right at the bottom, with precision and plenty of detail, and works his way up through more difficult sleights. For me there's lots more to mine, even from the early pages of volume 1, because I can never bear to work my way straight through a book. I like to skip around. That may or may not be the best learning strategy, but C'est La Vie, that's the way I'm built. Bob |

Oops! I wrote too fast. EndersGame was reviewing the DVD's not the books. I think I would have had trouble progressing with just the videos. But the books/DVD's combination is unbeatable.

I love you Harry and think your one of the greatest magicians to have ever lived. Having said that, I have had an EXTREMELY hard time trying to follow some of your videos, in the past. When watching you, it was like, a high school student trying to understand quantum physics. Your memory work was where I thought your true genius shined in a way, I could understand.
No matter how many times you say the wrong thing, it will NEVER be right.
If I'm not responding to you? It's because you're a TROLL! |
