In my thinking, the crystal tube (silk blow) effect is a parlor-style effect. The first time I saw it through just youtube performances stumped me so badly it is kind of embarrassing. It is such a beautiful effect, so I've bought the "normal" version and I would love to perform it regularly, but I am more so a close-up performer. The large size of the tube is kind of troublesome for a close-up performance. Plus, I think the normal method would not work well in a close-up performance.

There is a "mini" version: http://www.bobsolarimagic.com/shop/Crsta......w-Method which doesn't use the normal method and I guess uses the "new" method from the ice caps. I still don't know of its practicality for close-up use, though. Plus I would rather use my diamond cut silks.

Is there anyone performing the crystal silk tube in a close-up environment? Have you adapted it to fit a close up performance or have you kept it the same?

Just curious, what kind of close up? Formal, walk around or table hopping?

I could see maybe finding a place for this in a formal close up show if it's your thing, but for table hopping or walk around I still would not want to carry an almost 6 inch long tube around with me- it would be too cumbersome. Just something to consider.

Anything like silks is troublesome. You have to be prepared for wind, as the silks will be hard to control on windy days outside. Then you may have kids and spectators grabbing for the silks as they fly out of the tube. If in a restaurant or around food, the silks may land on someone's plate or their person. So work at grabbing for the silks quickly.

You actually will not know if this is good for close-up until you buy it. As mentioned, it has a different method, so will the new method fit for a close up environment, is not known.

With all these factors, I would not chose this effect for any kind of close-up performance.

I have worked with silks outside, and it is not worth the trouble. And you cannot trust the eager spectator who just has to cause you problems, especially if he thinks you are taking attention away from him.

The "trick" ia not "ready to eat" as it comes from the box!!!

The principle of the "knotted" silks, is ancient, and, up close, the method is readily apparent.

Just "doing the necessary" can be awkward. I've seen "corners" "tied" to middles!, and fingers "stuck".

I solved those problems for a young lad whom I was mentoring, about 45 years ago. He used it in his school show. and, with PRESENTATION, he got 5 minutes of laughs with it.

I wrote up the routine, with improved handling, to not only make the "move" easier, but, make the "knots" believable, too! It's in my book.

PM me.

Mr. Oslund,

I just read your routine and advice in The Road Scholar. Great job. And to think I have been wasting this gem as a small part of a magic to music routine. Sufficeth to say the next time I perform it will be a 3-4 minute routine.

Thanks again,

Jim
