Sorry, but the best working professionals do talk to their audiences but do not lecture.

Again I'm not sure it matters? What are you trying to get at?

Just that it's very unusual to have seen so many mentalist shows. I think you probably have seen more than most people.
Considering that most mentalists are corporate and/or private party performers and so few actually do theater shows, it's actually quite an accomplishment to have seen over 100 shows in person.

I would love to see a list of Senor's favourite mentalists. Perhaps we are being too hard on him but he really is on the wrong side of this debate.

I don't know the answer. I only know what I think is best and was wondering what others thought about it. I just don't think what you are suggesting will work with a mentailsm audience. I feel that you would be perceived as a magician. You are probably a very good magician. Perhaps that is your calling.

I still want to know how Senor F was able to see 100 mentalism shows. It's really an impressive feat.

For LL and John, it shouldn't be that amazing given my age and interest in mentalism since I was about 15. At about 60, that would be almost 45 years watching mentalist. Even if we reduced that number to 40 years, it would mean I had gone to approximately 3 shows a year. Seems very plausible now doesn't it?

This taunting and baiting you keep doing here is getting old. Members here have responded to the inquiries and questions you've asked, and simply expect the same in return. When you make such abnormal claims and statements, it only stands to reason some may have questions of their own. Especially with where you are located.
Seems when someone respectfully asks you for the same this is problematic with you. Talk about disingenuous. You yourself have said you are not a mentalist and are just in the process of putting together what you believe is a mentalism show. At one point you posted your outline of effects for it (which that post seems to have been deleted and spoke volumes about the points many here are making) so again other members having questions is quite expected and appropriate especially when you have such bold opinions and strong claims for someone who is not even a mentalist. Discussion is a two-way process. |

No disingenuity intended. I just wanted to see other opinions and was not 100% sure if my course was the best one. I have seen some posts which make a lot of sense to me and others that seem pure nonsense. I don't really feel there is need for any further discussion at this point.

And if the claim was accurate, his presentational ideas would be far different methinks.

Mentalism is about communicating with an audience. It's really about entertaining them -- first and foremost.
I've seen some mentalists who were as dry as toast drone on and on -- utterly enamored with themselves and the effect they are about to perform. But I've also seen mentalists who kept me on the edge of my seat or made me laugh out loud (in a good way) or simply give me one of those memorable shots of wonder. The REASON that the droning mentalist stands out -- as opposed to a magician who tends to drone on and on -- is that we don't, as a rule, use flashy props and our effects aren't punctuated with puffs of smoke and 'tuh duh' musical fanfares. We don't generally have pretty female assistants to provide distraction and...well...distraction. It's just us on the stage with a chalkboard or a bit of paper. Where amazing magic can be performed by a lukewarm performer because the effect itself is remarkable, mentalism is the opposite. It's about the performer and the material he presents. But MOSTLY it's about his relationship with the audience and the methods he has chosen to entertain and amaze them. My point is that a mentalist has nothing to hide behind. That's why we notice the bad ones more quickly. We are about presentation and carefully thought out word choices...material that makes sense -- all with the added layer that suggests that what the audience is seeing just might be real. That's why the number of effects doesn't matter. I've watched excellent shows that were just Q and A. I've watched rapid fire shows that were utterly amazing. It's about the performer. Period. Hopefully this perspective is useful. David
