In Dai Vernon's annotated version of EATCT there has been a lot of speculation that the proffessor 'held back' or 'others' (if you follow the conspiracy line) edited out a great deal from the original manuscript before it went to press.
I have been told by excellent authority that nothing was held back. However, I have read on the Genii forums that some have seen the original draft and swear a lot of the annotatios were edited or removed outright. Can anyone shed any light on this mystery. p.s. Despite the controversy, I think it is an excellent version of the classic. True, Vernon's notes are sparse, but they are laser accurate and very concise. Also, I think the printing is superb. The illustrations are beautifully reproduced and the layout makes it easy to read and practice at the same time. Kindly Bonedaddi |

Simpler to ask those who had the book and the notes in their hands. Rumors are their own thing.

I saw the original material - it was different from the final version.

I bought "Revelations" solely on the illustration of the gamblers cop in the sundry moves section. It is beautiful line work to my eyes.
Even with the final version being significantly different from the original, it is still a worthy purchase. Jennings Turn and Take bottom with the time shift. Ray Grismer's Overhand Cull (very useful) Mysterious Kid's False Shuffle with a cut and his superb Riffle cull (break in the back, please) Vernon's complete routine for 3 card monte. Also, it is on cream paper with black binding. How cool is that? Mike Caveney may still have some Vernon autographed "Revelations" left. Check it out.
One time, when I was young, I botched a sleight so bad, Vernon, Marlo & Miller rolled over in their graves. But I didn't see Elmsley, probably because he was behind the others.

No doubt an excellent book. I talked to Vernon about omissions, and he was quite explicit about the whys. He was also very happy with the published version, and felt that it represented his views accurately. You get more than your moneys worth from this book, so don't be put off by stories of missing info. The stuff that was left out was not Vernon's to publish, though it applied to the work. In a way Vernon was following Erdnase, and not revealing confidences without the right permissions...

I contacted Mike Caveney when I was looking for 'Revelations' and he wrote back that unfortunately there were no plans to re-print the book. I am not sure why because there seems to be a demand, (I have seen it listed for as high as $900.00!!??) but if you're patient you can usually pick it up on e-bay for between 75-150 dollars. It still seems quite high considering so many people seem to put it down in favour of Ortiz annotated version.
In any case, my advice is buy it if you can find it but don't pay more than 150.00 - Kindly Bonedaddi |
