Seen lots of discussion about the effect and method but not much on presentation. So thought I would share my experience so far. Am currently having a blast with this one! I recieved two peices of magic as gifts this holiday, Balance and an Obedio (aka Cubio) by Gimpy. They work wonderfully together.
The idea of a trained, invisible imp as the modus operandi for magical happenings used to be common for many routines; rising cards, mentalism revelations, dancing hank, etc. In fact, for a while imps were like rabbits as a symbol of a magician. That is the spirit in how I am using these two items. Obedio is presented as the training device for my imp; the block is his way of "pumping iron to make him stronger". It is examined by audience members and they are puzzled how the Imp is able to control it. The items from Balance are handed out saying these are common things with which imps like to play. There is a line for each one, "imp's have a horrible habit of smoking...they are little devils you know." The structure is then constructed not as a demonstration of skill of the performer but as a demonstration of the power of my imp. There is plenty of talking with the imp "ok, do you have it?", "Are you sure you can hold that much?", etc. They are dumbfounded by this effect. This patter line also gives logical cover for the careful deconstruction. "Hold on. I wont let it fall on you." "I will be carefull and take it off piece by piece". As final piece is taken off, a surprise flash occurs (via Flash Burst) with "There he goes to rest." This ends the routine without it being anti-climatic. It really has worked well for me in the three performances used (all house parties). Both kids and adults like the fun and will play along. It may not be as engaging as Joshua Jay's original patter, but it is fun and fits me. I am especially looking forward to Halloween. I may even pull out those spirit slates I haven't used in twenty years. Have to figure out what message a mischevious imp would leave... |

@FrankFindley, your imp show sounds fun...
No imps in my show, but I've taken a similar approach in that I've started using "Balance" with my Flea Circus (strong fleas and acrobatic fleas being critical in the building of the sculpture). As in your demonstration, it's been well received. I'm sure there are workers out there who have success with this as a magic effect, but I'm not one of them - but it's been a good addition to the flea show and, just as important, it's an automatic extension of the show for when a client asks for longer windows. |

I hadn't seen any reviews by Steve yet and the thing that makes his review stand out from many others to me is that he is an eloquent, authentic and artistic guy who has also a good sense of humor, possesses real communication skills, has a nice open and extravert facial expression on camera AND is a working pro. That's quite a unique combination, I find. To me his judgement is so much more valuable than that of the many "technical" magicians. As he clearly knows about entertaining, keeping an emotional connection with the audience, etc. I immediately subscribed to his youtube channel. Please keep it up Steve, I'm a fan!

Thank you very much for your kind words. I completely understand that these reviews aren’t going to be for everyone, especially as it’s still a fairly new project and I’m still, and always will be, learning, I’m really enjoying the process, but sometimes it takes a while, so the feedback means a great deal. Have a brilliant day/evening everyone.

Patter is about how a camera captures an image of a moment of time...but what if instead of capturing an image, it could capture the original? Then as the magician builds each stage an assistant "flashes" a camera. This freezes the item in space. I would love to hear others' presentation ideas/uses. |

For anyone who (like me until recently) doesn’t have the trick - Vanishing Inc put a 10 minute documentary about the creation of Balance as a free download on their site. The work and passion that has gone into it it quite astonishing - link is here: https://www.vanishingincmagic.com/magic-......balance/
This forum and the above documentary massively helped convince me. |

Great review, I still think that it looks like a model kit because of the way it moves.
Would be nice to be able to build your own construction with material you get with it, in that way you don't walk with pencils and crayons around if you don't want to, but objects that are more personal to you. |

Thanks SWiCh for the info, but I will not get this. Great that you have it and like it. It looks like a very well made product.
And like Steve said in the review, I'm sure that it will attract a lot of attention. Please keep us posted when you decide to perform with it! |

I enjoyed the review but at this point am being highly influenced by the number of people selling this not long after receiving it.

Those that own Balance may have seen on the explanation video the bonus section where Joshua shows my version of the switch box.
He literally says: "If James Bond would do Balance, this is what he would use". "The Switch completely fooled me, and I invented it!" It took me some time, but after testing various suppliers I finally found someone that can make them at the quality I was looking for. All hand made. At this moment I only have 5! Cost 350 USD. Will courier them globally per FedEx for 35 USD. I can also bring them to Magic Live. May take me 2 weeks before I can ship them. Email me at arnaud.van.rietschoten@gmail.com for pictures. Arnaud |
