The last post on this was deleted so I hope I am not breaking any rules by writing this again:
Derren Brown: Trick of the Mind - tonight (Friday 7th May) 10:00pm, Channel 4 Lets hear all of your views on the episode (WHEN IT HAS FINISHED! No posts before it starts, PLEASE!) King Of Diamonds Hmmm....not a brilliant episode, but perhaps slightly betetr than last weeks. It was a shame that they had to do another 'be a mindreader for 10p' that was rather vague and dull, especially when you can't hear what he says to her when he's 'explaining' how to read a mind... Oh well hopefully next weeks will be better. By far the strongest episode was teh first one, which wasn't even that brilliant. King of Diamonds

Anyone care to describe some of the tricks he performed?

This episode was the best I've seen so far...in terms of television entertainment.
Let's see what happens as the series rogresses. |

First of all there was no telephone scene at the beginning. Instead, Derren put about 5 £50 notes into a wallet, left it on the ground and drew a yellow circle around it. Loads of people walked past, some stopped to look, but nobody touched (maybe they saw the big TV cameras watching it). Anyway he did:
-He asked a conductor to look at Derren's personal list of CDs and conduct a tune without an audience being there. He did this, and Derren 'mindread' the tune. He did this several times. -Derren tricked a film student into thinking Derren was invisible. He said some mumbo jumbo on invisible things and then walked out the room, came back with his head in bandages. He took his banadages off, and apparently, in the student's eyes, his head was gone. He was asked what he saw above the jacket; 'just a wall' came the response. Derren then stood up, removed the jacket and spoke to the uttery amazed student - he couldn't see him. - Another 'be a mind reader for 10p'Boooooooring - Back to the orchestra - Derren asked the conductor to write down a tune, and tied his hands behind his back. He then asked the audience to start playing anything they liked, and the conductor was supposed to transmit the predicted melody to them. Slowly, but surely the orchestra joined together to play Mozarts 9th symphony. -Finally, more of the wallet which Derren picked up. Hope this helps, King of Diamonds

That was amazing, he is really letting the effect's shine through. There was a much wider variety of effect's tonight. The invisble man one was sooo dramatic, you could nearly feel the scaryness of it through the student. I was in awe at the orchestra one.
The 10p to be a mind reader was great too, it seems in this episode everything has been brougth together, and its finally producing more than expected. IMO.

Undoubtedly the finest episode so far.
When the ochestra slowly started playing 'Ode to Joy' I was utterly amazed. This could be the finest piece of mentalism I've ever seen on T.V. The 10p mindreading effect continues to amaze and confound me. I can understand why some are irritated by the repetition, but it doesn't bother me in the slightest. (Bear in mind that Canasta's T.V specials back in the 50s consisted of more or less the same tricks over and over again - magicians hated him but audiences loved him.) This episode has contained two highlights of the series for me: - The final piece in which the orchestra played the conductor's thought of tune - The film student being convinced that Derren was invisible. I've never seen anything like it on T.V before. Hats off.

The invisibe routine is a standard stage hypnosis routine that most stage hypnotists do at some time or another. Obviously the induction was edited.
The Orchestra was interesting... I still think he is much better live though. |

Interesting stuff! Can't wait to see it...
The more of him I watch, the more I realize that there's a lot more things going on during the preparation and we don't see any of that stuff. That's the reason why his tricks seem so impossible to replicate. |

Both of the conducting an orchestra effects were well thought out, routined and presented. I also like the "invisible man" routine. Yes, I know it's the age old stage hypnotist trick. However, it was performed with an edge that reminded me of his original Mind Control series. Although we knew what was going on, the spectator seemed to be genuinely unsettled...and you could feel it. Powerful stuff. Let's hope this series continues to improve in this way. |

After last week's disappointment, I found this to be a real return to form.
My views basically echo the more positive opinions among those already expressed... The presentation of the Invisible Man bit was, I thought, very well done. The use of the cinematic theme and, in particular, the Claude Rains style Invisible Man costume was lovely. Imaginative, stylish and sinister. However, the orchestra effect was surely a classic unrolling before our very eyes (and ears)... As the stands of Beethoven began to coalesce, and the caption-card was turned around for all to see, my prevailing thought was... "this is beautiful --- absolutely beautiful." The final touch of Derren untying the conductor, in order to let him round off the performance cleany, just felt like the perfect dramatic resolution to me --- it was so obviously "right" (and it served to illustrate what a conductor is actually for!). Perhaps I am over-reacting in the moment, but I think this one is going to stay with me for a long time. In fact, I think we may just have experienced the magical equivalent of the "Ode to Joy" itself! Pure Effect, indeed. |

I couldn't agree more. "Ode to Joy" I think may be his best effect so far. Just beautiful.

Yes what an amazing effect (ode to joy) sensational just sensational!
The invisible man was great as well. I think the be a mind reader for ten pence is quite entertaining, We have to remeber that only a few lay people will be watching each and every episode in the sieres as if it was a sitcom, thus they might not have seen it and it is great! Anyway can't wait till next week. Has anyone spoken to any non magicians about his show, what do they think? |

I have to second, third and fourth some of the comments here, this episode was finer of the 3, I agree with the invisble man returning to the roots of the original MC series, very eerie, the student seemed visibly shaken, in fact he looked awful afterwards, I hope he was de-briefed, the composer effects were fantastic and the climax of the "ode to joy" piece was one of the best "mentalism" effects I have witnessed on TV, I quite liked the wallet segment, I put myself into that situation and I don't feel the cameras would have been visible, the circle itself would have been more than enough to stop anyone picking it up, kinda reminded me of a "force field" protecting the wallet, maybe more could have been done of this?

It would certainly be interesting to see the wallet effect done again, but this time WITHOUT the yellow circle drawn around. I think that was the only think stopping anyone from picking it up.

That nobody picked it up wasn't so suprising. No-one even stopped to look at it - or at least, in the edited portions we saw, a great many people walked right by as if it wasn't there.
You want to know if anyone can do it? Get a wallet and a piece of chalk and a place to hide and try it out! Tom |

By the far the best episode of the series, darker and far more aesthetically pleasing in scope. I liked it all this week apart from the really tedious 10p Mindreading bits.
I videoed the episode again without the advert breaks and can you believe it only clocked in at 24 minutes!? I thought it was interesting that at his fantastic live show last week, the music used was the original (and better) Mind Control theme tune. BB |

BB,
I would be interested to hear why you find the 10p Mindreader effect to be tedious. I find it fascinating.

It was much better episode But I agree repetitive material to fill the show out spoils it for me.
I think the biggest problem for me personally is that it is over exposed and milked to much. Then again I'm sure he is winning new fans as he goes along and losing some old ones. And he still has the US to conquer which means he will go on for some time. |
