This look like the old street swindle game, it uses a large loop of chain. Steve Cohen only worked it out, most likely, using a necktie instead, and closed the loop by holding the ends together. I would look at the finger touching as one finger is the spectator's and the Steve's is the table top.
The chain effect is is performed on a table, with the spectator placing his finger in the loop on the table, and he only used one small release out of a full several minute presentation. Usually referred to as the Endless Chain or Loopy Loop. There are many rope and silk knotting effects in magic, and in different books. It would be difficult to locate which effect Steve Cohen may have used as his starting point. I believe it was taken from the Endless Chain effect. I could be wrong, but that is what it looked like to me. I believe I have given you enough information for you to search the Internet for what you desire. |

Okay, I did some searching as I remember Whit Haydn, who goes by Pop Haydn here on the Café put out a chain set years ago, he is not selling a DVD on the subject, the swindlers call it "Fast and Loose".
Take a look at this advertisement, it will give you some idea of what I am referring to above, if you don't already know. https://www.popsmagic.com/store/p59/Fast......PDF.html The Endless Chain book is back from supplies left behind after Supreme Magic in England went out of business around the early 1970's. The large bead chain is sold at any good hardware store. https://www.vanishingincmagic.com/magic/......s-chain/ Here is another DVD or download that is available as well on the Endless Chain. https://www.vanishingincmagic.com/magic/......EALw_wcB |

Although it has similarities to Whit's Fast and Loose, it is hard to tell what the set up was for the effect in that short clip.
If you are interested in F & F, you can find a version of it in various older books (e.g.; "Magic Digest" by Anderson, p87, under the name Australian Belt). I think a simpler version of this effect would be a better place to start (since F & F would seem to require a longer tie than in that video). A term for the method that I am thinking of, is referred to as "post and rope". (see Ency. of Rope Tricks p 340, 336, Tarbell V6 p113, which use that method, but it otherwise looks different. In the video, the "post" would likely have been the finger or thumb of the magician. A somewhat related effect/method is seen in https://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/view......&forum=4 and a reference for that method is in Ency. of Rope Tricks p323, under the name Thumb Amputation. Sooooo, not a quick and dirty answer, but some other places to look. John

Can anyone verify this reference? I do not have the Daryl Collection of rope effects. Makes sense, using a necktie in place of a rope. |

Yes, Daryl's Expert Rope M DVD's has "Square Detector", and it looks like it could be used to accomplish the effect in the video. I also see it as similar to the source I mentioned above. Hey; we're only 2 years late

John,
Thanks John for your help. With all the members that claim they have Daryl's rope magic DVDs you think one would have seen the similarities. The Café makes no claim that The Café promises instant solutions. Sometimes it takes a village. But at least Reonaru came through with a possible solution as well. Now if UKNeil is still interested, he can look up this effect he was so puzzled about. |

I didn't remember the trick from Daryl's Expert Rope Magic until you mentioned it (frankly, Daryl's presentation of that effect, was just not that impressive, and then there is the age factor creeping in (: ). But I agree, it takes a "village", and I personally am grateful for all those that have helped me out along the way. The Encyclopedia or Rope Tricks has essentially the same effect called Thumb Amputation p323 (which I think is a better reference than I gave in 2018) John

John Long, you are the tops! Thanks for your help.
At 73, I know what you mean about the age factor. I was not that impressed with the Million Dollar Magician presentation was well, but there are those Café Members that just have to know how something works or they will go crazy. They have no intention of getting the effect, they just want to know the secret. Most are not even magicians. |
