Jonathan Pendragon has agreed to perform at the grand opening of the new Houdini exhibit in Appleton, Wisconsin. Various magic clubs and other organizations had been making a certain amount of headway in getting the museum to drop their exposure, but it looks like the mighty Pendragons are above all that.
In an interview with Paula Zahn, Pendragon said that this exposure was all right. I'm not sure what his logic is. NO exposure is all right. If you are a Pendragon fan, write him and tell him what a rotten thing this is to do to magic. Maybe he will rethink this. Don't expect a reaction, though. He was one of the few major illusionists to refuse to sign the petition against Francisco Marotta when he was ripping off various illusions, including Pendragon's levitiation.

How can a man of his stature in the magic community do this? Is he so short-sighted that he doesn't realize he is hurting magic and magicians? I thought he knew what a debt he owes to magic.
I was planning to see their show in Las Vegas. I think I will watch Lance Burton, instead. |

Good idea. I think that anyone who was planning to see the Pendragon show should boycott it.

I don't know, some high profile magicians and celebrities do not like to be for or against many issues.

When the first information about the exposure at the Outagamie Museum went to press, David Copperfield went on television to state his position against it.
I went to the Pendragon's web site, and now I see why they may be doing it. They aren't working much. If you find out they are coming to your town, please boycott the show.

I'm not saying that you should picket the show. Just don't attend it. Tell your friends not to attend it. If the newspapers or television stations ask you to appear in order to express your views about why you are not attending it, don't tell them. Just don't go.

I must say that, as a child of Pan, I find this topic very amusing. I'm sure some of you will be "angered" or "hurt" by my reaction and some may feel I'm "downplaying the issue" but I'd love to add my theory to this.
Once, long ago, the secret of sawing a woman in half was printed in the newspaper. Dante, a very popular magician of the time, saw this article, and knowing that it was a pinnacle piece of his show, used this for his advantage. He would show the audience each night that what the paper published could not be how he did it and the audience walked out having no clue how it was done and it was exactly as the paper exposed. My point is this, considering that the Metamorphosis is the pinnacle piece of the Pendragons' act, couldn't it be possible that Jonathan and Charolette Pendragon may do the exact same thing? I could get into a whole thing on exposure and the lack of danger it has for real working professionals in our business for those who know how to handle it correctly but many wont hear it and I understand it. I will continue my linking rings routine although its been exposed over and over and, because of the way I perform it, no one ever discovers the secret. It may sound pompous but I've never had the problem and when someone from the crowd says "There's a hole in it!" (barring the obvious jokes. ) I have ALWAYS proved that it could not be so and they always quiet after it because they believe I proved it wrong. But I very rarely if ever get folks like that because of my presentation. My thought is not ONLY would I buy tickets to see a performance of the Pendragons, if I got the chance, I would pay to see them lecture, pay to meet them backstage and shake their hands and I would have no ill will for them. They are working professionals with more experience and style than many of us. To "boycott" a show over this is, in my opinion, not only absolutely hilarious but incredibly childish. I don't care if I get shot down for this, becuase here's the real kicker: I don't care what negativity you have to say to me because I'm almost certain you couldn't care less about my words. What can I say? I've always enjoyed the philosophy of Penn & Teller. A couple of "exposers" who have a Las Vegas Show and a Weekly show on Showtime. That boycotting thing sure does work. Most Respectfully Submitted, |

I am just wondering were did you hear about this? I looked on their site, and it doesn't have anything about Wisconsin. I realize they don't have every show listed, but they are working, and they get paid a lotttttttttttt to do the work they do. I know this because I looked into getting them to come here a year or two ago and they cost a lot more than I expected. Please let me know were you heard they were going to perform there.
Thanks |

I saw Jonathan on one of the major news networks last month. He made a few good points, but nothing that made me change my mind. This is a bad idea. The thing that bothers me most is that he admitted it was a different method being exposed then the one he uses. Pretty sad.

So in other words, "since they're not exposing my method, I'm fine with it"???
Doesn't seem like the JP I once admired. I guess what we can do is hope that he will have a change of heart... |

Guys guys guys,
Please-- stop jumping to conclusions. Ever think that Johnothan Pendragon might be one of the top illusionists in the world for a reason? Hard work, dedication, and solid ethics. No, I highly doubt he's morphed into the masked magician. Relax, and get the facts from a reliable source before you gather round and prepare to roast the poor guy. Jeez. |

Evan Williams Elite user 439 Posts |
I am not trying to roast the guy at all. Simply stating that, to be as simple as possible, "say it ain’t so".
I think all of us can relate that presentation is the most important aspect of magic. I was just reading a thread about your favorite illusion of all time, and most people agreed that "this may have not been the best illusion in itself, but the presentation when I saw it was awesome!" or something similar. In no way am I agreeing with what they are doing, but simply saying that all this will do is force magicians to become more unique in their presentation. By all means exposure is NOT okay, and I do look down on JP for his beliefs about that. I guess this will create more unique changes, new ideas, and all together a new revolution of metamorphosis routines. I already am thinking of new ways to present this classic in ways to make it just as entertaining than before (maybe MORE since I plan on doing it in a way that has nothing to do with the way it will be revealed). Just a little different view of looking at it. I'm not 100% about what I may have just typed, just looking at the brighter side of all this (I know, hard to believe there IS a brighter side...) There are those in the magic industry who follow this philosophy. David Devant was one and The Pendragons appear to be another. Having a different or opposing philosophical ideology doesn't make one wrong, or right simply different. I too am a adherent to the ideal that exposure is a straw man. Those who live in fear of their precious secrets being exposed usually do so because the secret is their only refuge. They have no presentations or inspiration to fall back on. If I lived in appleton I would have already purchased my tickets to this upcoming show and would be telling all my freinds to buy tickets as well.
