I enjoy all aspects of the magical arts. I like mind reading stuff, I like magic. I have performed a show called The Psychic Challenge and can offer the illusion of being a mind reader (not in a serious way like max maven or one of those cats) but I have often been asked (like all of us) How did you do that? Was it the squinting of their eyes, their body language. I have never answered with, "It's a gift." I just don't like to put a label on myself. Well you have answered your own question John and I think subconsciously you knew that was the way for you to go. It seems obvious that cartomancy is the right choice for you.

Your own perspective and purpose for doing a reading have more bearing than any other consideration. That's why I outlined how I categorize readings.
One of the values of palmistry is that you can avoid certain types of questions. Nobody is going to come to you and say "can you tell me when my boyfriend is coming back?" You can't, of course, but the long-standing popular image of card reading implies that you can. Palmistry, however, you can point out that it only tells you about the person in front of you, not about particular events. It describes, it doesn't predict. If you are more comfortable with a pack of cards for a reading, use that. By all means. But I suggest reading a book or two about shut-eye views of cartomancy (and this included tarot) so you can be prepared for how someone will likely approach you and what folks may expect of you. If you can find Paul Draper's video PEP talk from the McBride school from several years ago (used to be publicly available, don't know if it still is), that's about the best 20 minute intro to cartomancy you are ever going to find. I don't have his Penguin lecture, but I think he went over the card reading at that lecture. I used to read palms and tarot for the local metaphysical shop. I did palmistry for tips and as a way to get to know people (short readings). I did the tarot to answer questions. Since I genuinely like people, I never found palm reading to be tedious or boring. Every person is different and some will put a tip in the jar, some won't. But answering questions is a different kettle of fish altogether. There, I have to walk a careful line and think through a lot of the potential ramifications of what I say. I never feel it is a bad thing to say something like "this situation demands grown-up responsibility." I feel it is potentially a bad thing to lead people to expect things that are unlikely ("your boyfriend will be coming back to you within 3 weeks, no worries.") Palmistry avoids the question answering except in the very most general of terms. If you will normally have a deck of cards when asked for a reading, that's terrific. Use the tool you like best. Above all else, the one thing you really need in order to be a good reader is to genuinely like people. Really. If you don't like just chatting with people you've never met before, you very likely won't be a good reader. -Patrick |

Not sure that Max Maven offers 'the illusion of being a Mind reader." Also, if you've been asked 'how did you do that?' - chances are that your illusion show has succeeded. i.e. - You tend to be asked that question because the spectator looks at what you're doing as a puzzle, or something more closely aligned with a magician.

I don't particularly care what you call yourself. Knock yourself out! Just know that to be a good reader, irrespective of what prop you use, you must have empathy for people. I read some disturbing posts here recently. Not going into it now, it's Christmas Eve. Bit of friendly advice from someone who's been doing readings for over 20 years, it all begins and ends with empathy for people and putting yourself second. That's the essence of a great reading, in my experience.
Now back to the xmas movie.😀

If you didn't read the posts then perhaps you should. One of the challenges with the Café is often it's like a bunch of people that know each other are in a circle discussing their challenges and someone new comes along and starts adding their 2 or 3 cents. With no knowledge of past history of the people there or what they've already discussed and the real topic of the conversation ..... well you get it. I've got to go watch Hallmark Shows. See I have empathy! (just kidding cowboy) Merry Christmas. |

Good on ya!
BTW - I wasn't referring to this thread, although I have read all of it. Rather I was referring to a thread from a few weeks ago.... Happy Christmas to you and yours, too.

John,
Yet another option... My answer to this question relied on stepping back and asking what I was trying to accomplish. Ultimately, I decided I wanted to use a system that increased interaction with the participant. I also wanted something that wasn't static or seemingly random (like palmistry or tarot, respectively). Those are terrific oracles and can be used to great effect, but not by me. My solution was to use "The Cube". Advantages are that you can play it as serious or as light as you like. You can provide a psychological explanation for the results (if desired) and is open to free or directed interpretation. No props required, can be done anywhere, anytime. Because it's based on their responses, it gives more room for true dialogue. As a companion to this, you can look into Docc Hilford's "System 88" which used "The Cube" as its modus operandi, complete with tick sheets. I loved the idea but didn't care for Docc's sheets, so used those as a basis to come up with my own, which looks more modern and reflects information a bit more in line with how I communicate. Of course, sheets are not required, but it can enhance the experience for some people. Best of luck in your search, John. Hope you find what you're looking for.

Steven, I like those solutions. For the same reasons, I still you the “House Tree Person” drawing test. It is what I do in impromptu situations first (for strangers). Not new, but still very impactful.
