It's the #1 best seller at Penguin right now.

The effect is that of a 'thought-of' card revelation and it is exceptionally strong with a wonderful presentation. I developed a simple workaround for the ending in "Zen Poker" which will allow you to simply place one card face-down on the table (the thought-of card) without having to employ the strategy Max is using. I'm not suggesting that Max's ending isn't good, but this suits my preferences better. If you're interested in that touch, shoot me a PM and I'll share it with you. In "Hive Mind" you use a small pad to write down the details that the participants will fill in. In "Zen Poker", the participant draws a picture of the card they're thinking of on a small pad as well - so this is yet another reason why this is a perfect fit. Since you already have a small notepad in play, it just makes sense to slot in "Zen Poker" here. Both can use the back of a biz card to write on, but I think the small pad is better for visibility purposes. Max recommends using any small tokens to make the 'bets' with in "Zen Poker" - anything can be used, and so the coins are also a perfect fit here as well. I think you'll be very pleased when you manage to track down "Zen Poker" and see for yourself. |

C’mon, stop it already. This $15 trick is going to end up costing me $200.00.

Hi Sudo Nimh,
Thank you for the detailed credits! (Another magician gave me similar comments after the video was filmed.) Indeed, I think I did not get the history totally right, which I regret. Best, Matt Quote:

Hi ElliottB and no2ss,
I was wondering about this myself, and it's my trick! I can assure you that I did NOT ask anyone to rate or review this video or provide any incentives to do so. (I also don't yet have a mailing list.) I think that Penguin will sometimes send preview copies of certain products to select customers. I have no idea how they choose which products to do this with, or who to send it to. I don't think they would ever explicitly ask anyone to leave a positive review or suppress any negative reviews, though. I believe it's simply a marketing strategy to concentrate the "buzz" (no pun intended) surrounding an effect that they think will do well. It's not my place to express an opinion here on whether this is a good or bad thing, I'm just relating what I've heard. Anyway, I DID want to point out that the flurry of almost instantaneous reviews had nothing to do with me. Frankly, I was as surprised as any of you about this, especially since I have a Penguin Live Act that's been out for some time now (though we filmed Hive Mind the same day) and there are only four reviews at the moment...! Cheers, Matt Baker Quote:

Sudo Nimh, I'm REALLY happy to hear how much you like the effect, especially given how knowledgeable you seem to be about the history and underlying principles. And you're absolutely right that this trick is NOT meant for strolling or table-hopping environments. So if anyone out there is thinking of buying Hive Mind in order to use it for this purpose, don't!

Same here. This seems most appealing but I am not ready to take it on just yet.

Elliott: I meant to respond to your query about Penguin reviews earlier but my excitement over this effect caused me to lose it in the shuffle.
I'm in the same boat as Matt; I don't really know how the Penguin review system works either - it's a genuine mystery to me as well. For example, Michael Daniels purchased Mental Die-Mensional from Penguin, rather than through my site. He and I had never spoken prior to this. He liked the effect so much that he contacted me to tell me how much he enjoyed it and that he had a training app he'd built for it - which he very generously gifted me with and which is now included with purchases. He'd also left a review at Penguin. His review has never appeared there! He's not the first either. Several others also contacted me to tell me they'd liked the effect and that they'd also left a review on Penguin. Again, many of those reviews have never appeared either. Some people leave a review and it doesn't appear until several days later, while others have left reviews that went up almost immediately. I'm not complaining or suggesting anything nefarious. In fact, I'm quite pleased to be partnered with Penguin and my experience with them has been great. I just have no idea how the review system works either. (Sorry Matt...honestly, I'm not trying to advertise my own stuff on this thread. Just relating my own experience in response to Elliott's questions.) |

Getting back on track...
Yes, Elliott - I'm willing to bet the price of this effect that you'll love Hive Mind. It is definitely up your alley. If I'm wrong, I'll personally refund you and you can just send me updates for Switchcraft. Oh wait, you already do that anyways... You might as well just get it now - those things from the post office aren't here yet and you never know...there could be some sort of disaster that prevents or delays their delivery. I'm such a bad influence. |

OK. Now, I will get it for sure! I will try to buy and view it prior to Sunday. |

Sudo and Elliott,
With my Penguin Live Act I also had an experience where a friend contacted me to say he loved the lecture and had left a good review with Penguin. I looked the next day and there was no review by him on the site. I waited another day and then wrote to Penguin asking if there was some problem with their review system. Penguin responded saying that it had gotten stuck in their queue somehow, and shortly thereafter the review appeared on the site. Clearly there was nothing nefarious going on because it was a 5-star review which only helps Penguin! So I think there must just be some clunky aspects to the way they handle these things... Like Sudo, I've only had good experiences working with Penguin so far and look forward to working with them again in the future. Of course they overhype things from time to time, and they take full advantage of their large customer base to heavily promote products that they believe will do well, but I don't have any reason to think that they overtly manipulate the review process other than selectively sending out early and/or free copies of certain products. This is presumably a common practice, and as long as they don't insist that people leave positive reviews in exchange for a free product, I don't see anything wrong with it (other than the confusion it might cause when dozens of reviews show up on the site the same day a product is released, hence this discussion). It sounds good to me and am considering though may have to wait a bit as have a lot on my plate right now. The only negative that I can see is the number of coins one has to carry.
