Not entirely sure if this is the right forum but I recently started working on Houdini’s needle routine found in Tarbell 4. I use David Williamson’s version from his Ridiculous dvd set. No where in either explanation is it told what kind of knots to use one each side of the needles to hold them in place. The eye of the needles is too large to use a simple overhand knot on each side. Since I know nothing of sewing, can anyone recommend a type of knot on each side that’s easy to tie?

When I performed it a million years ago I could never get it to work with a knot on each side, so I ended up just tying a loose knot around each needle. Worked like a charm.

So you just did an overhand knot around each eyelet and left it at that? Sounds like I need to try that! Would be much easier!

The knots my sets have is a kind of loop knot, so that after cleaning, they can be repossession equally along the thread. I have no idea what the knot is called.

I’m surprised you find an overhand knot too small. I am using button thread as described by Scott Alexander and one knot on either side of the eye of the needle holds it in place.

Just thinking that button thread would hinder the effect more then it would help, the working of the effect. Of course that depends on the number of needles being used. If it works for you, then that is all that counts. |

Folks, needles come in different sizes and thread comes in different thicknesses. When I was doing this, I went thru a bunch of combinations before I found the one that worked for me. Once I did, I was good to go.
This was forty-odd years ago, so I can't give you the details.

I went the easy routine, in the 1970's I just ordered it from Ireland Magic, in Chicago, now Magic Inc. for $3.00. Yes, that was a lot of money for a non-essential.
I remembered the name of the knot, it is called in magic circles as the Chinese Knot. |
