I need a little help on this one.
I have a set of fire devil sticks and a routine I have been working on for quite some time. However, I'm looking for a cool opening. Do you have any thoughts on a unique way to light the tourches. Lighting the tourches with a lighter just doesn't carry the coolness with it. I'm looking for a bigger is better type approach. This is always an outdoor venue and often surrounded by spectators. Penny for your thoughts.

Here's what to do. The ends will be soaked in lighter fluid and easy to light, but you might also want to wrap a light layer of flash cotton around each end.
YOU NEED TO GET: A finger flint flasher, flash cotton, flash paper, sparkle additive, and some sort of candle device you can attach to your knee, you might want to ask around. Fill the finger flint flasher with the cotton, and a small wadded ball of paper which is full of sparkle additive. When you hold your hand up to one end of the stick, sparks will fly everywhere igniting that end. You can't do this twice without refilling or having a second flasher. That's where the candle on your knee (Which is the same color as your pants) comes in. Take the lit end and touch it to your knee, (which should be bent up so the flame does not travel up your leg). Spin the stick around so the unlit part becomes lit by your "flaming knee" Then you can put the candle out anyway you want. You could also use a glow plug TT. Hold your thumb above a lit lighter but not close enough to get burned, just to mime that you are "heating your thumb up" then touch it to the ends and they will mysteriously ignite. Learn to breath fire Get a dove pan, fill it with lighter fluid, throw a match in. Light both ends from the pan, then cover it with the lid to reveal money. Now you have a perfect tips jar. |

Those are some great ideas Jordini!! I use a "Flame From Hand" to do the initial lighting of most things.
So you'd "flame from hand" to light one stick then ditch the gimmick as you grab the other stick from where ever (box, table etc.) and use the first stick to light the second. X

GREAT IDEAS! And though I hate to contradict x-treem (in general I highly respect your posts) Devil sicks are lit on both ends of one stick.
I use a sterno cup and a wine glass- I dip the ends in the wine glass with Kero, toast my audience and "take a drink". I then light the two ends from the sterno-blow a fireball-and go into my routine. Good luck and please tell us what works for you in the end.

You could also have a long piece (or two pieces) of flash string going along the length of the devilstick and have the ends wrapped in flashcotton. Then you could light the middle of the stick and the flame would shoot in opposite directions and the ends would flare up due to the flashcotton. For attaching it to the devil stick, you could use little globs of rubber cement here and there, or you could tie it on with more flash string of flashcotton, or you could use some thin nylon thread that would just fall off after the string burned.

Whitelephant you are sooo right, I had just come from the Manipulation threads and had candles on the mind when I posted that.
You could still light the Devil stick with the flame from hand balance the ignited stick on your foot, do a spin kick into the air, getting it high enough to have time to ditch the gimmick and grab your hand sticks then go into your routine. Though I have devil sticks they are not the fire kind so I do not know if the move would work. I would think most tricks that you can do with the non-fire sticks you could adapt for the fire sticks. Make friends with a hollywood stunt man. Have him come running by in a flame suit and light the devil sticks off of his burning clothes.

Cool idea's!
Forgive my stupidity, but what is a sterno cup? I assume it is some kind of cup with a continuous flame? but cool start none the less. I've never used Kero for fire breathing. What's it like? I typically use parafin for wicks and breathing. I'm a big fan of the wine glass idea though. Very classy. Anyway, I like all the idea's. Flash string would be great but it is expensive. You don't get much in those little packages for $20. I like the candle on the knee approach. But I have safety concerns with the candle on the knee. It just adds another flame to the mix which I have to control. The idea of heating the thumb is cool. It makes me think that if it is dark enough I could also incorperate a D-lite into this effect of lighting with a hot thumb. Now I have to go out and play for a while and see what I can come up with. Thanks for the help.

If you just put flash cotton on the end of the torch your risk the cotton wicking the fuel and becoming just as wet.
Less with string but if you wait too long it will wick as well. In both cases you do not want to ruin the properties of the cotton or string. Best to set it just below. Cotton will FLARE and jump to the torch. Rubber cement can be a problem is too much will burn and I have seen it fall off in a burning flame to the floor. So it would depend on your surface to what you want to risk. |

Sterno cups are used by caterers (SP?) to heat food on a buffet table.
As far as Kerosine goes-I'm looking into parafin b/c it seems that Kero residue is highly damaging to the liver. It is also a taste that is remakably hard to get rid-of. (white tic-tacs are the best I've found!) So maybe a little off topic-how do you build your routine?

Ok, now I know what you mean by Sterno cups. I didn't realize they had a propper name.
I have done a little research and is looks like Kerosene is just another word for Parafin. Called differently in different parts of the world. For more info visit http://www.foreworks.com/liquid.html I typically use a lamp oil I found that claims to be over 99% pure parafin. However, it is the impurity that is toxic. These are chemicals to reduce the odour. I find this one nice because it tastes like water. I built my routine around moves I learned as a kid using a toy devil stick. Later on in life I got inot the serious fire. I started by editing a song that lasts about 3 minutes, then I built moves around a tune. (PM me if you want to hear the tune.) The moves I do in a routine include a 15-30 second devils eye, (spinning on one control stick), under the leg, the kick, rolls, ariels and all kinda of throws and flourishes. I don't do it often, it is more of a summer hobby.

I recently put some flash cotton in my fire book to help it ignite better. It became saturated in zippo fluid......and it didn't light too well. Saturated flash paper/cotton does not light easily.
