Is there an advantage to doing bill in lemon vs some other fruit? I, for example, have Carl Cloutier's bill in kiwi which I like. From a practical standpoint I was wondering why lemon seems more popular.

I think the yellow color of a lemon shows up a lot better against most backgrounds better than the brownish color of the kiwi skin. Also, while people might know about kiwis, unless they are from New Zealand, they probably are more familiar with a lemon. <groan> So while both might seem like props, a lemon is a more familiar one. There might also be something about the way the skin of a lemon looks and that it looks more natural after the dirty work has been done. Lastly, I'm not sure how juicy a kiwi really is, so if part of the deal is that you're hoping that the spectator leaves you with the bill, having one that's drenched in juice could help them decide they don't want it back. |

Probably easier to get lemons in most places. Also, the trick is old (Victorian era) so I doubt they had access to kiwis back then!
The main thing is what your presentation does, and what you think is funnier or best suited to you. I suppose you could use a watermelon if you could figure out a presentation that works! |

Lemon juice isn't sticky.

A rolled up dollar bill fits perfectly in a Lemon. Classicly, way back before most of you were born, it was a rolled bill in lemon, and a rolled playing card in orange. The old vaudebille performers are to blame.
Kiwi's are juicier and messier then the classic items. I don't think Kiwi's were imported back in the 1920's. don't' forget to offer wet wipes and towels to your spectators, and yourself. More extras to back to the show. |

Has anyone noticed that lemons are drastically shrinking? Back in the 80's and 90's when I did the bill in lemon they were huge, the ones I see now at the stores are tiny, and some are so small that a rolled up bill might not even fit. Some are as big a a kiwi. Maybe it is because of the Winter I don't know, but I seen them like that in the Summer also. Every now and then I see a bigger one but most are tiny now than compared back in the day. Kinda like how everything else is shrinking, size of the product, boxes, jars, cartons, bottles, yet the cost keeps going up...
Also I use "Bill In Kiwi" as well and overall I think that Bill In Lemon is better, and they last longer too and the skin stays firm longer than a kiwi. A kiwi seems to be more of mess and can get crushed easy if not careful.
