Mentalism is boring and only the performer can make it entertaining. Even it it is done right it’s difficult to sell as a show as you can check as an example that the show Gerry Mccambrigde has in las vegas its a theater for only 270 people in a town that gets thousands of tourist every day. Or Banachek himself lives in las Vegas and has to travel around the States for making a nice living. And if you think that being always travelling and every day in a different city its nice its that you don't have a family or a social life.

Half the people on this forum are probably less interested in making a living from mentalism or magic and more interested in just learning it because they find they enjoy it. |

270 seats at $34 (lowest price I found) is $9,180. Not bad if he's selling out regularly. Also, he's been doing that show for 13 years. Tickets through the theater's website are $60-$90 plus add ons.
Chamber Magic had somewhere around 60 seats I think. Steve Cohen is doing pretty well for himself, though. I think most people would agree Alain Nu is a successful mentalist and I've seen him perform for less than 100 people. I'd be quite happy making the kind of money he makes for doing a show. Aiden Sinclair isn't a mentalist but he does do pretty well for himself with fairly small audiences. At a workshop/lecture at ECSS he mentioned his show at the Stanley had sold $250K worth of tickets the previous year. No idea what kind of crowds he can have at the Queen Mary but again, he's pretty comfortable. Also, I'm pretty sure most performers end up doing quit a bit of traveling. I know in Nate Staniforth's book "Here is Real Magic" (Which I recommend) he talks about touring for six months of the year, for years. He's pretty successful as a magician, though. Heck, Derren Brown's shows are touring shows, and he's one of the most successful mentalists in the world currently. Personally, the show I want to do is smaller and more intimate. I'd love to have a nice, classy theater with 150-250 seats to perform regularly. "Mentalism is boring and only the performer can make it entertaining" - this is true for most forms of entertainment.

Exactly, except I'd say all forms (with the caveat that the performer in some cases of entertainment is inherent within the entertainment itself). The original quote "...only the performer can make it entertaining" is like saying "Well, you know, 2+2 is 4." And it can be answered in the same way, "Yes, that is a truism but that does nothing to progress the discussion we are having. The statement of an abstract thought, regardless of the truth, without any specific context is baiting at best." |
