Hi,
This post may belong more in The Words We Use section but I feel that the people who I would like to read it are more likely to see it here. I am a 17 year old illusionist from the UK and in a few years I would like to do a theatre tour, first 'round the northeast where I live then if it is successful around the country. The show will be very big and I would like to include a snowstorm (using Blizzard FX 2000 which I really like as I want to avoid the stool and the box for this particular illusion) I want to link it with a story similar to the type which Copperfield uses and I think Kevin James used to/still does use. What are the restrictions on this type of story; what registers as being too close to the story? Can anyone recommend another basic storyline currently not used by anyone that I could base my story on which still pulls the same sort of emotional impact? I'd be interested to hear any feedback. Cheers, TM |

I think that it depends on what you can convincingly portray as personal experience. I do a classic (confetti) snowstorm in China routine, but I tell about my (true) four years in Buffalo, NY (one of the snow capitals of the USA). If you have any personal experiences with unusual snowstorms (I've hiked in snowfields in the Rockies in August and in the Alps in June) you can build a plot around those.

I use the classic snow in China (confetti) type snow storm as well. The effect, method is, as you suspect, what works well for you. I use the routine as a closer and have written my own script that involes seeking the magic all around us. Think of why you wish to perform this routine deep in your heart. Think of why you think of snow as magical. Then go from there. It is a powerful routine. Use the routine wisely. and by the way don't be afraid to make the audience cry with emotion. Scripting comes too close just as good literature comes too close when the same words, themes, and phrases are used. Be creative young man; write some poetry, listen to some music, think of magic and snow, then put them all together.

Temple Magic, there is a Magician in UK called LOKI and he has what I think is a cool presentation for the snow storm. It is non verbal but the idea is brilliant.
He is a Magic Circle member. |

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replys. DSilverfield, I have seen LOKI's act several times and I agree with you; it is great. Edflis and blutrol - I have really thought it through and the real reason that I want to perform Snow with the Copperfield style story is the same reason he does - to invoke the same emotional impact and feelings. I also use a lot of psychological anchors etc. to help bring the emotion out on stage. The main question is whether or not Copperfield would be cross about someone basing their story on the one he uses. The other question is, is the story his or someone else's? Any other feedback would be great, TM |

My snowstorm story has nothing to do with snow. It's still very emotional. Think about that. Does it have to be snow?

OK. Thanks Michael. Could you PM me or reply to this to let me know the lines along which your story runs? I'll not copy it though lol.
Thanks, TM |

Copperfield's scripts are essentially his own though not legally. But then why not come out with your own reason?

I appreciate your fondness of DC's routine but it has been seen so widely I fear you would simply be showing your audience something they have always seen as Copperfield's. It is important to build your own mark in the eyes of your audience. The routine can be strongly emotional for the audience. Let your creative juices flow.
