Don’t see it on the Vanishing site , but it is on Penquin. So a bit confused, is it going to be on Vanishing?

I enjoyed learning Pile Driver. I like the simplicity of the easy version, and I enjoy the mental challenge of the more difficult version. But I can't stop myself from tinkering with ideas -- so here's a completely different presentational angle...and a slightly adjusted methodology. First change I've made is that I've adapted the methodology to only use 15 cards. I don't want to deal out more cards than that. Next change is that I use a Thought Transmitter wallet (I love finding uses for it!). Here's how it plays out...
The ideal situation is to do this with a couple. You ask them which of the two has a stronger intuition? Whomever they select, you hand them the TT wallet and ask this first participant to follow the instructions inside. They open the wallet, and on the top of the Post It note it says "Write down a number between 1 & 15." While they do that, I deal off 15 cards, hand them to the second participant, the "less intuitive" of the two, and ask him to think of any of the cards, but to keep it to himself. While that's going on, I take back the wallet from the first participant, wrap a rubber band around it for security, then set it down on the table. By this time, the second participant is thinking of a card. I take back the deck of 15 cards and shuffle them so that he has no idea where his card is located within the packet. I tell him that we'll test his intuition. Since he's been deemed "less intuitive", I'll make it a bit easier on him. I divide the packet in to three face down stacks. I want him to use his intuition to located which stack has his mentally thought of card. He points to one, I fan the cards in front of him (I don't see them), and he lets us know if he was correct or not. If he's not, I have him try it again with the remaining two packets. After his first attempt, I say that since the odds of being correct are 1 in 3, if we do it three times, chance would suggest that he should get it right one of those times. I deal out three face down packets quickly so that he has no idea where his card is located. We try it again, and then a third time. Afterwards, we evaluate how strong his intuition has been. Was he average? Better than average? Less that average? Then I turn to the other participant. Her partner had a simple 1 out of 3 test, but since she's been deemed "more intuitive", I've made her challenge much more difficult. I open up the wallet to reveal that she was asked to selected a number from 1 - 15. Let's say she wrote down the number 9. But what makes this more challenging is that she was asked to intuit this number before she even knew what card her partner would think of - and in fact, at this moment, no one other than her partner, knows the identity of the thought of card! So the partner announces the card he's been thinking off, and is then asked to deal down to the 9th card. Sure enough - her intuition was spot on! What I like about this presentation is that there's a reason to deal out the cards in to piles, and motivation to locate the card's location each time. It's a test of intuition. |
