I don't perform professionally but I still like to have a set of tricks planned when I perform for friends and family. Also, I'm not great at sleights and have been gathering my favorite sleight free card tricks that I can add to my arsenal.
My plan is to have 3 killer tricks consisting of an opener, middle, and closer. If people are into it, then I have a list of impromptu tricks that I can add in the middle to extend it. Right now I have a middle and a closer. My middle is a modified version of "The Lone Stranger" which is a gilbreath trick. It's great, but has too much procedure for a good opener. However, it requires a full deck set up, ( just alternating red and black cards ) so it does need to happen early on. I don't want to do a deck switch since my closer is a two deck trick that uses a gaffed deck that I bring in at the end. I don't have the pocket room for 3 decks. So I was thinking that maybe a small packet trick for an opener might be a good idea. I own a couple of packet tricks including twisted sisters, and another that involves the spectator predicting which King is face up among a pack of the four Kings. However, I'd like to do some more research. If possible I'd love to find a really strong packet trick that didn't use additional gaff cards but also wouldn't eat out of my stacked deck too much. I'm ok if I had to rearrange a few cards in the deck before going into Lone Stranger. I'm also not against a gaffed packet trick if it's a really strong effect. Any book, DVD, ebook suggestions? |

Perhaps Poker Test 2.0 would fit the bill. The cards are gaffed but can easily be switched out as you transition into your full deck routine. I use a different story when I use it as my opener. Three rapid visual changes quickly establish your magic cred.

I hate to say it, cos I don't want to give it away (joking of course), but my perfect opener is Odd Quad. Go to the late Daryl's website and you'll find a perfomance of it.
It's short, visual, colourful, minor spectator involvement and has an astounding finish! What more? I' ve done it so many times and never fails to amaze and above all, makes your audience understand what they are about to see... Take a look and let me know Mark |

I have sort of a transmutation angle that goes into the history of card cheats trying to take the idea of metal transmutation (lead into gold) and apply it to cards. So being able to change the cards in the deck to whatever they needed them to be. Poker Test 2.0 can be the micro version and then I can ditch the cards and pull out the full deck to show the macro version of this transmutation skill and how it can be done to cards that are in the spectator's control the whole time. Thanks! |

I think either Eye Exam by Danny Archer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QaklSbfOFk or Paul Gordon's Killer OMG https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0L3CYPrS3Q both make great packet trick openers.

Woody has a packet trick in his Book in English that he specifically uses as an opener. It’s a good routine.

I often open with Jumping Gemini. Always gets a great reaction.

I used to get GREAT reactions to Twisted Sisters. I've since just stuck with B'Wave due to the fact it's 4 less cards to be accountable for and the reaction is just as good if not better!

Not slight free, but very simple, you could start with Twisting the Aces, or NFW.

Originally it was a live perfomance. Here it is. Enjoy as I did. He was one of the greats, even when performing simple stuff as this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgcCMvdFJUE Mark |

May I suggest the classic gamble amble? It is great story and the slight is simple. Yes people know you have more than four cards, but the sheer number you reveal, even the final Joker, seems beyond belief

What is your character/persona?
For me, B'Wave is what works for me. I don't do a lot of sleight/eye candy magic. If I did, I would use the trick that was shared of Daryl, perhaps NFW leading into Dr Daily Last, followed by tricks that fit that aspect. By understanding what type of magician you aspire to be, will help figuring out the opening packet trick. There have been some great suggestions. |

I was never able to get the reactions I expected from it and so I went back to the version where, after showing blue backed cards and then red backed cards, you end up with four completely different bright colours on the backs. Trost’s TRICK-KARDS is another great twisting effect with multiple changes.

One could combine Mark’s back color changes with the additional face change of TRICK-KARDS.
