Has anyone busked in Princeton, NJ? Or do you live near there and have you seen buskers?

I'm looking for a casual pitch not too far from me, and I'm wondering if Princeton could be it? I've never been there, but I've scoped it out with google images, and it looks like it could be decent. I mailed the city about regulations, and they mailed back a very cryptic response which I think means it's legal, but I'm not sure. Would love some info on this place as a possible pitch if anyone knows.

Got interested and did some googling myself.

Here’s great story about a kid who started busking after college. Later in story he talks about living in Princeton (but appears he was going into NYC to busk). Cool idea from this story, he would go to tennis clubs and take their old tennis balls, fill them with sand, and put balloons around them then sold them as part of their juggling act:

Hmmm, the article says he obtained a permit to teach and perform. That's good news, though not at all what the city implied. Thanks for pointing me to this. I'll need to do some more digging with the city permitting.

And what a brilliant idea to sell balloon wrapped tennis balls!

Quite a few buskers will sell merchandise, but depending on locations it opens up legal requirements to have a business license.

It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. Go out there and do it!

Good luck!

What exactly was the response the city gave you?

That's somewhat true, a lot of the times.....but not always. Let me explain.

If it's public property, you're there for a short while, then yes. Often it a grey area and city staff will just take the easy route and just say No!

Often the area or event is entity that has a license program....you can often get in pull off a few shows before getting shut down.

However, if it's private property, or an area administered by a separate public entity, and you hope to work the pitch for sometime.....then you are very often better off approaching them. You may have to purchase a license or audition.
The advantage of this is that if successful, you don't have to constantly look over your shoulder and other than sharing the pitch with other licensed performers. This is especially the case if travelling...you go all the way to a location and get shut down...a waste of travel & accomodation dollars.

Unfortunately the world is a changing place. More and more areas are getting regulated plus soon as a pitch is viable...it's often broadcasted over the internet.
Gone are the romantic days. It is still possible....but different.
