You could always go back to elementary years and use Paper Mach'e. Painted, it looks decent if done right, plus it is light weight which you will need if it will be on cardboard.

Now a days I think that many special effect houses for movies use foam. Cuts easy with a hot knife and can be sanded to shape. It's light and it will also take paint...
Get a few 1" peices and glue them together to get the correct thinkness. Make your Tiki and then cut the whole for you tube... Good Luck Try here for more information (Check the video clips links): http://www.hotwirefoamfactory.com/products/customer/home.php

Just go to a party supply store, and buy a cardboard Tiki. They usually have them for Hawaiian type parties people throw during the Summer.
While you are there pick up the jumbo playing cards they sell for gambling parties. Great for Jumbo card tricks. Check your phone book yellow pages. |

I agree with Astinus. Paper Mache, since you want to use a cardboard tube. To build up the face and body, you could try using "Fun Foam" which is a foam sheet that JoAnn Fabrics and other craft places sell. There are a couple different thickness available, use the thickest one. After the glue dries, mache over everything with some tissue paper. Then paint a light tan and then water down some dark paint and "wash" it. If you wanna keep detailing, water down some black and "spatter it some" using your sister's toothbrush. (Test on a surface first)Finish with a clear coat spray.

The folks at Oriental Trading co have plastic tiki god cups, as well as ceramic I think, depending on the size you need, you have a tube plus bottom...use the hacksaw or hot knife.....
already painted and formed!

Have you tried styrofoam? Styrofoam may be sculpted with the use of an Exacto Knife. Another great material is sponge. You can get sponge from the Dollar Store and carve it up with scissors. One last thought is paper sculpting. The local library holds many books on art and paper sculpting will yeild some fantastic results. Give it a try, if you would like I can post the paper sculpting book I find most useful in my artwork.
