A few months ago I saw Michael Close perform in the Monte Carlo. He did an effect where the spectator names any card and it is on the top (or he cuts to it, can't remember). I don't remember the details but I think there was a red card which he flashed accidently (I think, don't know if it was part of the effect). I wish I could remember more, but maybe someone who has seen him perform knows about this version of the effect. I would be interested in learning this effect...If I knew what the effect was. All I remember is being amazed.

If the effect was a card named was cut to the top of the deck, I would venture an educated guess that Michael was using a memorized deck and estimation. He writes extensively about both of these topics in his book "WORKERS 5". The combination of estimation with a memorized stack is a very powerful and underutilized approach to card magic.
Good luck with your search. All the best, James Foster |

Even if he could do that almost every time, it seems too risky of an effect to perform table hopping. Oh well, I'll do a search and see what I come up with. Thanks again. Shane Wiker |

Yup, he could, using a memorized deck, estimation, and glimpsing.

I saw Michael Close's lecture when he came through Arizona (mostly items from his Workers Series). That is exactly how it is accomplished. Don't be fooled though, you don't come out of the gates performing this. He said he had put a lot of time into it.

I have a friend using the same methods. He cuts to the wanted card each and everytime.

Micheal could and cut to any card names 8-10 times. He talks about his estimation drills and what not on his workers tapes. Im quite jealous!

The effect sounds like his "Wishing Trick." It's on one of his "Very, Very Close" videos. I'll check when I get home and let you know which one.

Estimation in conjuction with the Memorised Deck is an awesome combination. I have used it for the last nine years. It takes practise but it is worth it.

It is the wishing trick from the very very close vhs volume 7 which goes directly into red blue mama fooler...which is probably why the red card flashed. Both tricks are amazing and use a mem deck + estimation well worth your time.

On the Workers video that explains the wishing trick, the spectator selects the jack of spades, which is the first card of the Aronson stack. Therefore, he does nothing and the selected card 'comes' to the top.
In the explanation, Mike says that coincidence happens more than you might expect. Obviously if the spectator thinks of another card, he's skilled enough to estimate and cut to the card. |
